Students compete in
free throw competition
EXETER - Approximately 50
students competed in the Council
Knights of Columbus Free Throw
Championships held at South Hu-
ron District High School on Sat-
urday.
The annual competition includes
winning free throw contenders
front SHDHS, Precious Blood and
Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Schools and Exeter Public, Us -
borne Central, Stephen Central, and
McCurdy Public Schools.
Students aged 10 to 14 are each
allowed 15 shots from the foul line
and those with top scores are de-
clared winners. Ten and 11 -year-
olds shoot from a shorter distance
of three feet.
"The only tie you have to break is
first place," explained Convener
Don O'Rourke, adding tied players
are given an extra five shots each.
According to O'Rourke, the
event gives kids a chance to com-
pete without relying on other bas-
ketball skills.
The competition, which originat-
ed in the United States, began in
South Huron in 1983 when the
Knights of Columbus chapter was
set up in the area.
, - Winners of Saturday's contest
'compete at SHDHS on Feb. 24 in
the District Free Throw Champion-
ships that include participants from
18chools in Exeter, Zurich, Lucan,
trathroy and Parkhill.
Top scorers of that challenge
move on to the Regional Cham-
pionships at London's Regina Mun-
di College on March 2, which will
include contestants from Huron,
Middlesex, Oxford, Elgin and
Grey -Bruce Counties.
Jason Revington takes a shot following the free throw compe-
tition held at South Huron District High School on Saturday.
About 50 students from area schools competed in the Council Knights of Columus Free Throw.
Championships held at South Huron District High School on Saturday. Back row, at left are
winners Crystal Hesse, 13, Jason Revington, 13 and Scott Skinner, 14. Front row, at left,
Amanda Yearley, 10, Tony Regier, 10, Krista Hodge, 11, Kieren O'Rourke, 11, Laura Sararas,
