Snowmobilers
form partnership
for special event
A snowmobile ride, Rendez-
Vous '97 will raise money
for children with disabilities
TORONTO - A new partnership is being formed as the Canadian
Council of Snowmobile Organizations (CCSO) and Easter Seals Can-
ada begin plans for what promises to be the most exciting and largest
snowmobile event of its kind in the world - Rendez-Vous '97.
This unique Trans -Canada snowmobile ride kicks off mid-January
1997 and will take place over a 40 -day period. Riders from all 10
provinces and the two territories will be represented and will make the
coast-to-coast trek covering 7,000 kilometers of trails.
Organizers hope Rendez-Vous '97 will position the growing sport of
snowmobiling as exciting recreational activity while helping Easter
Seals celebrate its 75th anniversary and raise money for children with
disabilities across the country.
"This new partnership is extra special for Easter Seals," Stated Bob
Howard, national development director, Easter Seals Canada in a re-
cent press rete..se. "Not only will Rendez-Vous '97 celetrate our long-
standing and positive relationship with the snowmobile community,
but it will help raise money for, and awareness of children with dis-
abilities and their needs in every community in this country."
Easter Seals provides essential services and programs to children
with disabilities across Canada. Founded by a group of service clubs
in Southwestern Ontario In 1922, Easter Seals will be celebrating 75
years of service in Canada in 1997 and Rendez-Vous '97 will be part
of those celebrations.
"Rendez-Vous '97 marks the opening of the Trans -Canada Snow-
mobile Trail from Newfoundland to British Columbia," said Don
Lumley, CCSO president. 'This opportunity to showcase snow-
mobiling on a national level and raise money for Easter Seal kids is a
perfect example of dedication and generosity of Canadian Snowmobil-
ers."
The CCSO acts as a liaison between government and industry and
snowmobilers by providing pertinent information and promoting safe-
ty and environmentally responsible snowmobiling among its mem-
bers. The CCSO, through its provincial organizations represents al-
most 900 snowmobile clubs across Canada with just under half a
million members.
Gear up for Rendez-Vous '97 - the ultimate Trans -Canada saow-
mobile ride. It's coming to a community near your

puck hype
Dear Editor
The following letter is in re-
gards to alt the hype and turmoil
caused in the last few weeks by
the U.S. television station Fox
with their high-tech puck.
I personally hope that they dis-
continue the use of it or at least,
don't let it invade our Canadian
television stations.
As an avid fan of the hockey,
never in my life have I ever seen
or heard of anything so ridicu-
lous. A blue screen around the
hockey puck, clouding my tele-
vision so that people in the
southern parts of North America
can follow the puck closer and
watch the game more often is ri-
diculous.
Like it is really hard to watch
a black object on a white sur-
face. I could probably under-
stand it if television were in
black and white. Then it may
pose a problem when trying to
locate the puck.
The comet -like trail the screen
produces when the puck is shot
at a speed greater than 120km/h
does more harm than good.
When the comet -like trail ap-
pears on my television I can't
even see the puck so I don't un-
derstand how they can say they
are making it easier for people
who are not all that familiar with
the game to locate the puck.
Personally I think Fox has tak-
en the game and turned, or is
trying to turn it into something
you find in a video arcade.
I am not trying to say that I'm
not for the creation of new high-
tech mechanisms that are trying
to simplify stuff for the viewing
public.
am
I all for the net -cam and
the mask -cam that John Van-
briesbrouk sported in the all-star
game.
Someday there just may be a
camera that is run by robots that
floats directly over the ice sur-
face getting right in the face of
players but never touching them
and I'm all for that.
But this haze on my television
is something that I disagree with
and don't appreciate at all.
Sincerely,
Gary Buan
