New Legion members
The Exeter Legion had 13 new members Join the Royal Canadian Legion. Back row left to

Members vote on allocation of funds
EXETER - The Exeter Legion had 13 new mem-
bers join the Royal Canadian Legion on Thursday,
January 25 at the general meeting. During the meet-
ing the members voted to give the VON Palliative
Care Program $250.00 from the Nevada Fund and
also to donate $330.00 to the proposed Junior
Achievement program for Huron County schools
and $1200 to the Stephen Central Public School.
These donations are from the Clint Hodgins Legacy
Fund, which is to be used for youth programs. Mr.
Hodgins was a local horseman, who at the time of
his death made many donations to area clubs.
The Branch holds weekly Saturday meat draws to
assist the Huron -Middlesex Royal Army Cadet
Corps, and these are open to the public. A special
game of snow golf is planned for February 25 and
all interested members/friends are to sign up by
February 17 during the Branch Winter Sports
Night.

Personals
Sympathy of this area is ex-
pressed to Eleanor Durie, her fami-
ly and grandchildren, in the sudden
death last Friday January 26, of her
husband Sid Durie. They lived
north of Shipka for several years
while their youngest son Glenn at-
tended Public School.
Several men from this area at-
tended the annual Beef Producers
Association meeting and dinner,
held January 17 at the Royal Cana-
dian Legion, in Clinton.
Annie Zielman, accompanied by
her daughter Ruth Zehr and hus-
band Jerry, their children Mandy,
Anneka and Sam of Zurich have re-
turned from a 12 day holiday trip
to Florida.
Rachael Turner, of London, spent
some holidays with her grandpar-
ents, Earl and June Rader last
week.
Belated happy birthday wishes
this month to Gertie Stade.
Earnest Morenz, of London, (for-
mer resident of this area) lost his
summer home at camp Ipperwash
to fire last Saturday January 20.
Hugh and Annie Morenz visited
recently in Seaforth, with her sister
Mary, and her husband Art Finlay-
son on the occasion of Mary's 76
birthday.
Golden Agers
Grand Bend Golden Agers held
an anniversary games night Janu-
ary 24 at the Legion preceded by a
pot luck supper at 5:30 p.m. Euchre
winners were: ladies high - Emma
Couckuyt, ladies low score - Mar-
garet Adams, ladies lone hands was
a tie between Hazel Norton and
John Kelders. Mens high - Mary
Moser playing a mans card. Mens
low - Clayton Lovie, mens lone
hands, a 3 way tie between Ron
Dann, Cleve Brophey and Elda Ad-
ams.
Bridge winners were Bert Phil-
lips and Elena Black. Solo winners
were Cathy Junker and Ann Cann.
Cribbage winners were Bert Pullen
and Donna Cowan.
Deadline for buying dog tags March 15
All dogs in Hensall are to be
licenced.

HENSALL - Hensall residents are reminded to pur-
chase dog tags by March 15, 1996 to avoid a late pay-
ment charge. Tags are available at the Municipal of-
fice. All dogs within the Village must be licenced.
United Church news
At Hensall United Church, this past Sunday, the
prayer of approach and Lord's Prayer were given by
the Worship Committee. The Old Testament Lesson
was read by the Christian Development and Commu-
nication Committee. Prayer was given by the Property
Committee. The Children's hymn was "Rejoice in the
Lord Always", and the Children's Story was "Every-
one is special". The Old testament lesson was deliv-
ered by the Membership and Sacrament Committee.
Rev. Annen's message was "Jesus says Just Do It".
Greeter was Joanne Rowcliffe and the ushers were
Raye and Jean Jacobe. The New Santus begins next
Sunday. Anyone needing a ride can call Kay Mock or
Cecil Pepper.
Confirmation classes meet after church February 18
in Pastor Annen's office.
A Food Grains lunch is scheduled for February 22.
The United Church Observer subscriptions are due

At Carmel Presbyterian Church, Rev. Dan Rou-
shourne's message was "Building Barns, Postponing
Life". Joyce Pepper was the organist for the ministry -
of song. Harry Smith welcomed the worshippers. The
Annual meeting will be held February 1 at 7:30 p.m.
The P.C.W. will meet February 5 at 8 p.m.

Zurich figure skaters compete for medals
Several skaters com-
peted at the H.O.M.E.
competition in Dor-
chester.
Cannel Sweeney
ZURICH - Members of the Zu-
rich and Area Figure Skating Club
have been going to competitions re-
cently.
. Krista Schilbe, Zurich and Sarah -
Rae Lovie, Grand Bend, won med-
als in London recently.
This past weekend, several mem-
bers of the club took part in the
H.O.M.E. Competition in Dorches-
ter.
On Friday night, January 26,
Krista SChilbe won first place in the
provincial qualifying gold ladies di-
vision.
Sarah -Rae Lovie came in second
in the provincial qualifying senior
bronze ladies division. The two
girls will compete in the Western
Ontario championships in Ingersoll
on March 23.
At the H.O.M.E. competition in
Dorchester on January 27, Megan
Gingerich and Jamie Eckel came in
fourth place, both from Zurich. Jeff
Miller, Dashwood, came in second.
Also competing were Jane Sim-
mons, Alysa Few and Kim Powell.
Their results were not known at
press time.
The younger group of skaters are
getting ready for the "Futures Com-
petition" in Strathroy on February
25. Their skating carnival will be
held at the Zurich Arena on March
17, with theme "Holidays on Ice".
Fun night
The C.W.L. Fun Night will be
held on February 7 at the Mitchell
Community Centre at 6:30 p.m. It
will cost $1.00 per person.
Women from St. Boniface Parish
are to meet at the Church for a ride
at 5:15 p.m. They can bring a dish
for the potluck supper, along with
their own plate, cup and cutlery. If
you plan to attend, phone Mary Re-
gier, (4035) by the end of January.

The next Women's Institute
meeting will be held at the Blue
Water Rest Home on Monday, Feb-
ruary 5 at 1:30 p.m. Members and
visitors are welcome.
Stamping workshop
A Valentine's workshop on mak-
ing your own cards with rubber
stamps, will be held February 4
from 1 to 5 p.m. There be several
techniques shown and a variety of

Youth dance
An Optimist Club Youth Dance
will be held at the Zurich Commu-
nity Centre on February 16 from 7
to 10 p.m. for children aged 11 to
15. It will be supervised.
Brownies and Sparks
The Zurich Brownies have their
meetings at St. Boniface School
gym on Tuesday evenings with
leaders Nicole VerOude, Julie
Becker, Carol Prang and Janet
Thiel.
On January 31 the group will be
working on their Scientist badge at
the Exeter Lion's Club Youth Cen-
tre, along with Brownies from oth-
er areas.
The Sparks, a group of five and
six-year-old girls, have their meet-
ings once a week with their leaders
Bonnie Schenk and Ruth Zehr.
Skating party
Members of St. Boniface School
and Parish enjoyed a skating party
at the Zurich Arena on Sunday af-
ternoon, along with free hot choco-
late, sponsored by the P.T.A.
group.
Baby food labels
The Optimist Club sends a re-
minder that they are collecting
Heinz baby food labels until March
15. They can be dropped off in the
box provided at the entrance of the
Municipal Office.
Girl's Club
The Girl's Club will be travelling
to Bayfield on February 1 to skate
outdoors, weather permitting. They
will enjoy hot chocolate at Alli-
son's afterwards.
Scouts and Beavers
All third and fourth year Scouts
spent the weekend at Black Oak
Lake with four leaders, Jim Zim-
merman, Eugene O'Brien, Mark
Taylor and Bill Stauttener. They
hiked 3 1/2 miles on snow shoes to
reach the cabin from the road.
They are planning a camping ad-
venture to pass badges on February
9-10 at Gord Hill Winter Camp.

at the Lutheran Church Hall on
Tuesday nights.

A successful progressive euchre
party sponsored by Zurich Golden
Agers was held Monday evening,
January 22 at the Township Hall
with 11 tables in play. Winners
were: High, Emil Becker; Second
high, Lee Regier; Lone Hands,
Sheldon Wein.
Door prize winners were Helen
McKay, Jeanette Turner, Maude
Hoffman and Gwen McKeller.
The next euchre party will be
held Monday evening, February 26
at 7:30 p.m. at the Township Hall.
There will be lunch and door priz-
es.
Zurich Senior Diners met Janu-
ary 24 at the Community Centre
with 42 attending. Meda O'Brien
was the 5W50 winner. A poem 'My
Feathered Friends' was read by
Gertie Fleischauer, who also con-
ducted a card bingo game with
prizes going to the lucky winners.
Solo and euchre games followed.

home afterwards.

held in the Parish Hall downstairs.
