Shannon Baer, 9, plays with the unique barbie house created by her grandparents. The Betties
have created about 150 wooden hobby items over the years, including this house that was
constructed without a blueprint.

Barbie and Ken invest
in Exeter dream home
EXETER - Shannon Baer's bar-
bie dolls won't have to live in
paper rooms now that her grandpar-
ents have constructed them a home.
Made of birch plywood, the es-
timated 60 -pound house stands
three feet high, three feet long and
a foot deep. The five -room property
is partially carpeted and has hard -
surfaced flooring in the kitchen and
bathroom.
Lacy valances grace glass -paned
windows and imitation grass serves
as a maintenance -free lawn. A front
porch is attached to the the front of
the house, which holds a hinged
front door.
Gingerbread trim decorates the
eaves and a widow's walk balcony
serves as an artistio addition to the
roof. The exterior color scheme is
based on Shannon's own William
Street home. The package deal
comes complete with handy mov-
ing rollers on the home's founda-
tion.
Grandpa Betties worked on the
house structure in his Goderich
workshop over the span of a month
and Grandma did the decorating,
which included window panes
made of carefully measured tape
and wallpaper complete with bor-
ders.
"You had to have a pretty straight
eye," she said of her interior design
task.
The basic materials cost the con-
tractors $80.25 including the wood
for the shell and roof. According to
Shannon's mother, plastic versions
of this piece of real estate cost at
least $150 in retail stores.
Amazingly, the beauty was built
without a blueprint, althoughlA an
effort to compare technique, the
Betties did cruise around to ex-
amine shutters of choice homes in
their own neighborhood.
An identical home was con-
structed by Beales Inc.. for Shan-
non's cousins in Goderich. Al-
though the grandparents have been
known to create at least 150 wood-
en items over the years, they claim
they want to keep their skill a hob-
by and prefer to avoid mass sales.
As for Shannon, she's just happy
Barbie and Ken can now live in
comfort.
"You can play with it," she said
when asked what she likes best
about the new property. "You don't
have to use paper."
