Mr. "Ice -man"
Jack Spelra Is known as "Mr Ice Man" among his neighbors. Speirs volunteers approxi-
mately 30 hours a week clearing and flooding Grand Bend's only outdoor ice surface. Speirs,
who is not a skater, says he enjoys watching others use the rink.

GRAND BEND - Jack Speirs of
Grand Bend doesn't have much
spare time on his hands lately.
When Speirs is not running his
business, Beauty 'N' the Beach in
downtown Grand Bend, he can be
found on the Old River Bed on Al-
berta Street clearing and watering
the village's only outdoor ice rink.
Along with his neighbor and
friend Paul Bossenberry, the two
send approximately 30 hours a
week main-
taining the
rink, which

peirs volunteered for the project
in ecember and said the snap
tha*'s this winter has made their
tasllmore difficult.
"Our biggest challenge is fight-
ing the weather. Every time it gets
warm we lose the ice.and have to
start over again," said Speirs.
So far they recovered from two
warm spells but the shallow riv-
erbed is now frozen through and
has developed a good base making
it easier to bring it back.
Ironically, Speirs and his family
don't use the rink. When people
ask Speirs why he devotes so
much time to the project he says
the answer is obvious.
"The satisfaction of knowing oth-
er people are enjoying it. When I'm
done I'll sit down and watch eve-
ryone skating and having a good
time," said Speirs.
The rink is usually full on week-
ends and after school during the
week and Speirs is convinced the
community needs a regularly main-
tained skating facility.
After living in the area for 10
years, he said volunteering for a
project such as this comes natural-
ly and he doesn't think twice about
the time he devotes to it.
"Grand Bend runs on volunteers,
they keep the community going,"
he said.

The neutral colour palette is still the favourite and not
likely to disappear. Inspired by natural colours found in
nature such as coral, seashells, sand and stones, neutral
colours are easy to work with because they
accommodate change in decorating. When yqu choose
upholstered furniture in these colour tones, whether
tone -on -tone or solids, it's easy to completely change the
look of your room by adding decorative accents of
different colours. You might think twice about
purchasing a red three -seater sofa, but throw a red
accent cushion on a neutral sofa and voila, you have
created an exciting new look. Another added attraction
of the neutral range of colours is their ability to have a
calming affect in our fast -paced world.
5011T PALI anoints
The beauty of soft, pale colours is that they offer you a
rainbow of colours. While neutrals generally consist of
many shades of white, cream, ivory, tan and grey, soft
pale colours include soft blues, greens, yellows and reds.
Although solids are popular, generally you choose these
colour tones for their ability to mix with complimentary
colours in stripes, plaids and checks. Try to imagine
your living room with a cream, blue and tan plaid sofa
and two armchairs in solid tan with cushions that match
the sofa. The possibilities to mix and match are endless.
3TZCNC VI1RANT COLOURS
The attraction to strong vibrant colour is universal.
Again nature plays a part in providing inspiration. Just
look at any floral garden and you will be thrilled by the
display of colour. Ruby reds, gorgeous greens, beautiful
blues and sunshine yellows are colours that excite and
stimulate. Popular choices in upholstered furniture
come in rich tapestries, velvets and chenille.
After recently visiting the International Furniture
Show in Toronto
I would like to advise our customers that it is very
obvious the "casual living style" will be with us for
the next decade. At Dinneys we believe it is
important to adjust to constantly changing
lifestyles. We have certainly adapted our furniture
and accessories to match the requirements of our
customers. We invite anyone who is interested to
drop in and discuss the new trends with us and to
also see our selection.
