Atoms win Silver Stick
WINGHAM - The Stephen
Township Atom Nightmares won
the "C" division championship at
the Wingham Regional Atom Sil-
ver Stick hockey tournament last
week.
Sixteen teams competed in the
10th annual regional silver stick.
The Stephen atoms competed in
the "C" category of the B-2 divi-
sion beating Chesley 5-3, Ripley
4-2, Tara 10-3, Mildmay 12-4 and
shutting out•Chesley in the fifth
and last game.
Head coach Bev Thompson
said a combination of good skat-
ing and accurate passing was the
formula for their success and the
Stephen Atoms performed both
flawlessly.
Clinching the regional "C" fi-
nals qualifies them for the North
American Silver Stick held in
Forest from Jan. 12 to 14.
"1 feel really good about this
team. It's going to take a gopd
team to beat us," said Thompson.

THE INTREPID
SNOWMOBILER
By Craig Nicholson
About half of all snowmobiling fatalities happen on ice. Some are
from collisions with fixed objects like docks, rocks, pressure ridges
or ice huts. But most are from drowning.
('lashing suddenly through ice into frigid water is a scary thought.
Equally frightening are prevalent myths that make too many riders
complacent about the risks of ice travel.
"I've Lived Here All My Life" - So that makes it a good place to
die prematurely? Familiarity breeds contempt. Last winter three
young adults drown in one tragic incident. As cottagers, they were
raised in the arca and had travelled that lake hundreds of times, as
recently as earlier that week and done some ice fishing too. But a
different combination of elements opened water around an abnormal
pressure crack and much to the shock of every long-time resident, it
was game over.
"I Know This Lake Like The Back of My Hand" - My own cottage
is on a small lake where you can't lose sight of shore. One night, I
took some guests out for a short tour. Blowing snow soon started,
disorienting me from my usual markers. After a brief panic, I found
the shore and followed it home. We were lucky that night, but the
disaster potential was that the others would have followed my lost
self anywhere. Similarly, our lake hasn't had a pressure crack in 30
years, but last winter a neighbour broke her wrist hitting one. You
can never be too sure.
"What Goes Down Must Come Up" - Many snowinobilers have a
false vision about going through the ice. They see a hole and a person
in it. But consider several chilling facts: often drowning occurs when
a rider hits open water at high speed. How far from the ice edge does
that moving sled carry you? What damage occurs when you hit water
too hard? Whcn you sink, how do you know which way is up? If you
do surface, which way is safety? How long can you tread water?
Hope that no other speeding snowmobiles follow you in, because
odds are good that one will crunch your head as it comes up for air.
Even if you do breakthrough ice, your trajectory will probably be
at an angle away from the entry hole. Pray that there's no current to /
sweep you away to oblivion.
"I'm Strong Enough To Get Out By Myself' - Maybe, if you don't
panic when your helmet fills with ice water or when your body's
involuntary shock gasp waterlogs your lungs or when you don't know
which end is up. Don't under -estimate the weight of soaked snow
gear. Cold will sap your muscle power faster than you ever imagined.
Strong or not, you've got less than a minute before you start to lose it.
Last winter, a strong man drowned in less than five feet of water.
"My Buddies Will Help Me" - Don't count on it. They may go in
too, or worse, not even miss you in the dark. They may not have
rescue tools. Or they may be too scared or panicky to act fast enough. •
Going for help will likely take too long.
"Emergency Personnel Will Rescue Me" - Often, local police, fire
fighters and ambulance drivers are not trained in ice rescue. Without
it, they are frequently forbidden to help, for safety and liability
reasons. With cutbacks, their availability is restricted. Besides, most
ice tragedies don t happen close to such assistance. You're on your
own.
"My Buoyant Suit Will Save Me" - There's no doubt floatation
will help, but it won't get you out of the water. So unless there's help,
you're still on your own. You may not drown, but if you can't get out
(and it's not easy), hypothermia will likely kill you. At least your
corpse will be bobbing for easy retrieval.
"I'll Be Safe Whcn I Get Out" - Not. Unless you can warm your
body core quickly, hypothermia will kill you.
I scared myself writing this column. I hope it shattered your
misconceptions too. Maybe we'll lose a few Tess this winter. Until
next time, happy trails and remember to Sled Smart - Ride Safc, Ride
Sober. Bring A Buddy to Snowarama. For club or driver training
