South Huron basketball teams net wins
Senior and midget basketball teams beat Goderich Wednesday, juniors lose by two points
Matt Sims goes for a rebound during a South Huron senior
boys basketball game against Goderich on Wednesday..
The Panthers won 47-34 and beat Listowel 68-51 in a H -P
Pre -Christmas Tournament Friday.
EXETER - The South Huron sen-
ior boys basketball team travelled
to Listowel Friday to compete in
the Huron Perth pre -Christmas
tournament.
The Panthers beat Listowel 68-51
with Bryan McAllister scoring 19
points and Marty Debruyn netting
18, however, South Huron lost to
tournament champions North
Western 81-54.
McAllister and Debruyn com-
bined for 29 points and Steve Cool -
man scored eight.
The Panthers entered the tourna-
ment hot off a victory over Gode-
rich at home on Wednesday. South
Huron took the lead early in the
game and never looked back beat-
ing the Vikings 47-34.
With the aid of an aggressive de-
fense, the Panthers kept Goderich
off balance using a combination of
outside shots and exploding into
the key area at will.
The South Huron junior boys
and the midget boys basketball
team also played Goderich
Wednesday.
The juniors blew an early lead
losing 54- 52 but the midgets hung
in for a one point victory beating
Goderich 66-55.
George McEwan, coach for the
juniors, said the team ran into foul
trouble allowing the Vikings to
come behind from a 13 point def-
icit.
"We have to play a little more
disciplined and we're going to
work on that to keep them from
getting those kinds of fouls," said
McEwan.
Trevor Boersma played a strong
rebound game gathering 14 points
from inside the key and went 100
pet cent shooting from the foul
line. David Farquhar scored 17
points for South Huron and netted
five out of six foul shots.
"We're good at forcing the other
team out of position and getting in-
side to take all the rebounds," said
McEwan.
The two point loss to the Vikings
means the pressure will be on
South Huron to beat them the next
time they meet in Goderich later
this season. Something McEwan
feels his team is capable of if they
stay away from the fouls.
The Midget boys basketball, led
by coach Wally Webster, started
their regular season on a winning
note squeaking by Goderich with a
one point victory on Wednesday.
The Panthers won 66-65 with
Matthew Knox leading the scoring
drive with 13 points. Shawn Stuck -
less and Marshall Middleton
notched 10 points each and Mat-
thew Verhoog made a crucial foul
shot with only 10 second left to
play.
Coach Webster said the midgets
played well for their first game of
the season.
"A lot of them had the jitters but
once they overcame that they
played well on offense and de-
fense," he said.
Webster tried to play a lot of his
players to give them some con-
fidence and one player who got a
lot of court time was Matthew
Middleton. Measuring six feet five
inches, Middleton can probably
outreach any player in the league
and was doing a good job of it
Wednesday.
A disadvantage of being so tall, is
the ball has to bounce higher for
Middleton making it easier to get a
steal off of him, however, being a
6"5 basketball player on a rel-
atively short team does have its ad-
v'fiitages.
'1 "I like to use him right away to
intimidate the other team" ex-
plained Webster.
Marty Debtrayn beats a God6rich' player to penetrate the
key. Debruyn had 10 points against Goderich and 18
against Listowel.
Lucan Irish beat Lambeth but lose to Port Stanley
Chris Skalkos T -A staff
LUCAN - The Lucan Irish are
playing some of their best hockey
so far this season; however, head
coach Scott Bogart feels the sta-
tistics don't show it.
Lucan defeated Lambeth 3-2 at
home Wednesday before losing to
Port Stanley 6-3 Sunday.
"I thought it [Wednesday] was
one of our better efforts," said Bo-
gart about his team's win over
Lambeth. "But their goalie kept it
respectable."
Brent Mills takes control
of the puck for the Lucan
Irish during; their home
game against Lambeth
Wednesday night
The Irish dominated the game
controlling the puck well behind
their opponents blue line and out -
shooting their opponents 34-24.
Dave Lindberg scored twice in the
third period carrying his team to
victory. Trevor Emms scored the
other goal.
The points from Lindberg came
as a surprise to Bogart because, up
till now, he hasn't been an of-
fensive threat.
"I told him to start shooting at the
net and he did. Both goals came
off slapshots," said Bogart. How-
ever, Lindberg sustained a groin
injury before the game ended put-
ting him out of action for at least a
month.
Bogart credits left winger Dereck
Boshart for coming out of the clos-
et and humping up the tempo of his
game notching two assists.
"He's back into his playoff form
like he was last year, but that's
what we expected from him 20
games ago," said Bogart. "But bet-
ter late than never," he added.
The 6-3 loss to Port Stanley on
Sunday was deceiving, the game
was a lot closer than it appeared.
Lucan was outshot by three and
trailed Port Stanley by only one
point for most of the game before
they gave up four goals in the third.
"I thought our se Ind period was
the best we played all season...but
we kind of shot ourselves in the
foot breaking down in our own
zone," said Bogart.
Port Stanley was sharp at both
ends jumping on every mistake
made by the Irish and using them to
pull ahead by three.
"They're all offense, when you
make one mistake they usually
bury it."
Mike Bodnar scored once and
Steve Matthews added two but it
wasn't enough to overcome the
three point deficit as Port Stanley
claimed the two points.
Matthews' two goals moves him
into third place in team scatting
just behind Emms and Bodnar.
1
Lucan now sits in second place in
the Morenz division but are still
trailing the league leading Hawks
by ten points. They will try to nar-
row the gap when they take on
Langton at home Wednesday and
Mitchell on Saturday.
More than halfway through the
season, Bogart hasn't even begun
to think about the playoffs. He's
more concerned with maintaining
his team's current performance for
the much anticipated hack to back
league match -up with the Exeter
Hawks slated for the last week of
December.
"We've been playing good but
we're not getting any results. In the
end, I think it will all even out," he
said.
