I'm always amazed by snowmobilers who climb off their sled
complaining of sore muscles or an aching back. It's as if they didn't
expect a day of snowmobiling to be any work. 1t may not be right up
there with wood splitting or the triathalon, but snowmobiling has its
own unique muscle requirements and, like any other physical
activity, can cause injury if mishandled.
I know whereof I speak. Even with a daily work-out, I can be stiff
the morning after a long ride. Ten years ago, before I really got into
heavy-duty riding, I had back surgery to repair a disc problem. 1
haven't had any pain or discomfort since that day, despite racking up ,
(so to speak) almost 100,000 kilometres. But that fortuitous outcome
was by design, not luck.
I've always opted for the best suspension available, upgrading
stock parts with aftermarket where needed. I prefer not to ride at
night because I can't see the bumps fast enough to react and protect
my back. I rely on strong thigh muscles to absorb undue shocks and
on a bumpy trail, will often crouch like a jockey to bring those
muscles more into play. But my preparation starts long before the
season.
As indicated, I work out daily. My regime, put together by an outfit
called the Canadian Back Institute (locations throughout Ontario),
includes stretches and weights designed to strengthen the trunk
muscles that support my back. Concurrently, my snowmobiling
muscles get exercised. While on tour, I do my stretches each morning
and night to prevent and alleviate stiff muscles. For the most part, 1
succeed. Here's how. Unless otherwise specified, hold each leg for a
slow 30 count.•
1. Sloppy Push-up: assume regular push-up position with hands
immediately under shoulders. Straighten arms to full extension, but
keep hips relaxed on the floor. This arches your back from the waist
up. 10 slow repetitions.
2. Knee To Chest: Lying flat on your back (I stick a rolled towel
under my waist), extend one leg straight out and, placing hands on
the knee, bring the other to your chest.
3. Knee To Side: Start from same position as #2, but bring right
bent leg over the straight left one and push it down to try to touch the
floor on your left. Keep your shoulders as flat on the floor as
possible.
4. Leg Spread: Same prone position, bend knees until you can place
the bottoms of your feet together with their outer edges on the floor,
then push down and out on your knees to spread them and try to
touch to the floor.
5. Knees To Chest: Same as #2, but both knees at once.
6. Leg Stretch: Same prone position, keep one leg flat and straight,
while raising the other towards the ceiling without bending your
knee. I use a towel hooked over my toes on the raised Icg to pull
down and provide a better calf stretch.
7. Knee Push: Same prone position, bend right leg with foot flat on
floor and bring the left leg up and over so left ankle rests on the right
knee. Push your left knee away from you with your hand.
8. Knee To Chest #2: From the same Icft leg over the right position
as #7, bring the right knee to chest with the left ankle still resting on
it.
9. Hamstring Clench: Roll over facedown and with left leg flat and
straight, reach back and grab right ankle, pulling it towards your
buttocks as it bends at the knee.
10. Upper Back Stretch: Standing, extend both arms out from the
sides at shoulder height, elbows bent. Work your elbows back as if
trying to make them meet at your spine, then down and around to the
front and cross your arms in front of your chest, pulling on your
shoulders with your hands as if trying to reverse elbows. Repeat 5
times.
I don't normally recommend hack supports, because strong trunk
muscles are the best remedy for hack pain.
Until next time, happy trails and remember to Ride Responsibly:
