The annual Hayter "turkeyspiel" featured 16 teams battling it out in a total point format with the high- est point winner taking home the prize. In the 9 a.m. draw an Exeter team led by skip John Smits beat Ralph Astle's team, also from Exeter who had to settle for second. The two Exeter teams going head to head in this draw played a tight game until the sixth end when As- tle's team missed a couple of shots breaking the game wide open. Randy Holder's team from Lon- don took third. Skip Bill Rowe and his Exeter team won first place in the 11 a.m. draw defeating Mark Freure's rink from London. Bob Stafford's team from Leamington came in third. Two other Exeter teams par- ticipating in the tournament, skipped by Walter Denys and Phil Turner curled well but did not place in their draw. John Smits' team from Exeter was the overall winner with each team member taking home a large Christmas Turkey. Ralph Astle, tournament co- ordinator, said the "turkeyspiel" went well for the Exeter teams who take their curling seriously. "The guys arc there to win. It was very competitive. Usually every ,honspiel is," said Astle. "Everyone is starting to play good right now," said Bogart. Everyone including Chad Green- lee and Steve Hudson. The duo teamed up last Wednesday scoring two goals each during Lucan's 6-3 victory over Bulford. Daryle Bo- shart and J.D. Adamthwaite poked in singles to round out the score. Three of Lucan's six goals came on powerplays, as it continues to be a vital element in their offensive arsenal. "We've been working on the power play lately and .we have a couple of units that are clicking for us," said Bogart. The powerplay was also a factor against Seaforth as Mike Robb put on a one -man -show Friday scoring both of Lucan's goals, one on a powerplay and one shorthanded. Robb is the hottest player for the Irish right now Scoring seven goals in his last four games. He was as- sisted by Brad Henderson, Adamth- waite, Hudson and Mike Ja- remchenko. The 3-2 loss wasn't hard for Bo- gart to stomach considering Lucan has beat Seaforth the last nine times they met starting last season. "We. were due for a loss to them," said Bogart. "We created lots of opportunities [to score] but we weren't as sharp around the net as we have been. Sometimes you play good enough to winand you don't." Losing to Seaforth increases the point gap between them and Lucan in the Morenz division but after winning six of their last seven games, Bogart isn't worried about his team's performance. "It's hard to get upset when you're playing good;" he said. Youngsters play a snowy street hockey game in Centralia Sunday morning. Use the body safely, says hitting and checking instructor HURON PARK - There are two factors to checking in hockey. De- livering a hit, and receiving a hit. And doing it safely is what Ray McKay is teaching the 21 young hockey players who attended his checking and hitting camp at the Stephen Township arena Thursday and Monday night. Body checking is permitted at • the Peewee level of minor hockey and McKay said many first year Peewee players are not prepared for the physical side of the game." Thz kids play six years of no contact then all of a sudden they're thrown into body contact hockey," he said. McKay's program is designed to teach the youngsters how to use the body safely. He emphasized the best way to protect yourself from a hit is simply being pre- pared to take one." Usually when [hockey players] get hurt, it's because they were not prepared for the check or they didn't sec it coming." he said. This is the first time McKay has conducted the camp in Stephen and he hopes it will benefit the Ste- phen players who are up against some big teams this year.
