Hockey Panthers on the Prowl
Coached by
Pete Heeney,
South Huron is
undefeated so
far this season.

EXETER - The South Huron Dis-
trict High School hockey team took
on Goderich last Tuesday beating
the visiting team 5-3 at the South
Huron Recreation Centre.
Tim Morgan scored the first goal
for South Huron and Ryan Freiter,
Blair Moir, Brian Richardson and
Scott Rasenberg followed suit with
a goal each,
South Huron out -hustled the
much bigger Goderich team who
were unable to use their size to
their advantage.
"We tried to use our tears speed
to skate around them and wear
them down," said head coach Pete
Heeney.
The strategy seemed to work for
the Panthers who outplayed their
opponents in the third period and
consequently scored the two extra
points -.they needed to clinch the
victory. However, the Panthers
were not afraid to throw their
weight around as right winger
Adam Jean and defenseman Brian
Richardson flattened Goderich
players with clean body checks.
Heeney likes to run a disciplined
hockey team and it showed Tues-
day as a few South Huron play.ers
backed away from the rough stuff
in the first period leaving Goderich
with the two minutes in the penalty
box.
"I like fast and hard hitting hock-
ey but I think too much rest-
lessness and a lack of discipline can
•
;ost you a game," said Heeney.

ftemoon. The 2-Q hockey Panthers are a fast skating and highly disciplined squad ready to de-
fend their H -P championship.
*This almost proved true for the
Panthers who allowed Goderich to
tie the game at two after taking
four penalties in the second pe-
riod.
"I always stress they will play
better if they can control them-
selves," Heeney said adding he
prefers to see how fast they can
out -skate their opponents instead
of seeing how fast they can knock
them down.
The victory on Tuesday was the
Panther's home opener which was
attended by a large and noisy
crowd of South Huron students.
They won their first game of the
season beating Central Huron 4-3
in an exciting come -from -behind
victory on Nov. 24.
South Huron will put their two
game winning streak on the line
when they meet St. Marys this week
and Madill on Dec. 19.
Heeney said both schools hive
strong teams and the Panthers need
to work on moving the puck out of
their own end before they will be
ready to face them.
"We'll definitely have our hands
full," said Heeney.
Chiefs tie Langton
The Exeter juvenile Chiefsblow a three
goal lead in the second period and
have to settle for a tie Saturday night.
EXETER - The Exeter Chiefs blew a three goal lead to allow
Langton a tie during a home game at the South Huron Recreation
Centre on Saturday.
As usual, the Chiefs started off quickly with Gavin Snell scoring
the first goal unassisted after 'creaking in alone. He decked the goal-
ie with some fancy side to side stick work that left the Langton
goalie looking the wrong way when he plumked it in.
Derek Beckett and Mike Bowerman teamed up five minutes later
to set up Mark Glavin who scored Exeter's second goal.
Fired up on a slow day and faster on a good day, Rob Kobayashi
found himself alone with the puck in front of the net on more than
three occasions in the first period but was stimied by a lighting fast
Langton goalie.
Kobayashi finally beat the stubborn netminder with only a minute
left in the period chalking up Exeter's third goal.
With a convincing three goal lead heading into the second period,
it seemed as if Exeter would coast to another victory, but the Chiefs
came up flat allowing Langton to score three goals.
Glavin scored Exeter's only goal in the period putting the puck in
with a slick backhand assisted by Beckett and Scott Barclay.
With a short break in between periods and a motivational blast
from coach Henri Debruyn in the dressing room, it seemed fair the
Chiefs would regroup in the third and hold on to their three goal
lead.
Langton had other plans.
Taking advantage of the Chief forwards who quit hitting in their
own end, and with a red-hot goalie to back them up, they took their
chances, pressed for the tieing goal and got it midway through the
period cementing a 4-4 tie.
Coach Debruyn wasn't happy with losing a three goal lead and he
let his players know it.
"I can't figure out why they keep doing something that isn't
working," said Debruyn
The Chiefs have been followed by a second period curse that has
plagued them throughout the season, but Debruyn said this scenario
was a lot worse.
"Usually we're hit hard in the second period but tonight it was a
steady decline for the rest of the game."
Debruyn credited Langton's goalie for shutting the door on the
Chiefs when they were clicking early in the game.
"We ran into a hot goalie making 'look what I found saves' all
night. We got some quality shots on him but he rose to the occasion
every time."
The Chiefs take their next two games on the road facing Aylmer
on Sunday and Ingersoll on Dec. 21.

North Middlesex end ExeterHawkS winning streak with a 4-4 tie
EXETER - Their winning streak
is over but they are still undefeated.
The Exeter Hawks tied North
Middlesex Stars 4-4 Friday night
bringing their 17 game winning
streak to an abrupt end, however,
the Hawks have yet to lose a game
since the season started.
Bill Hodge scored Exeter's first
goal on a powerplay when he let
loose a blistering slap -shot from
just inside the blue Ione. He was as-
sisted by Shayne Robinson and
Mark Livermore.
Ryan Chamney almost made it 2-
0 early in the second with an out-
standing individual effort breaking
in alone on the Stars goalie and
managing two quick shots but he
was foiled by the netminder's
quick glove hand.
Craig Corriveau finally put the
Hawks up by another goal when he
picked up a rebound from Rob-
inson in front of the North Mid-
dlesex net and chipped it in with a
back hander.
The Stars, however, rebounded
with two goals of their own taking
advantage of a feeble attempt by
Exeter to clear the puck out of
their zone sending the contest into
the third tied at two.
Cranium cracking Nathan Burns
wasted no time putting the Hawks
back into the lead scoring off a feed
from Robinson and Livermore af-
ter bouncing a puck off of a pho-
tographer's head. But the stubborn
North Middlesex team replied with
a goal and then went up one scor-
ing halfway through the third.
Robinson tied the game at four a
minute later with assists from
Burns but neither team could find
the fifth goal in the dying seconds
of the third which would have
clinched the game.
The Hawks pressed for the game
winning goal during the overtime
period, but the Stars played a tight
defensive game content to go
home with the tie and the game
ended in a four all draw.
Head coach Dave Revington said
he didn't mind their losing streak
coming to an end as much as he
minded how the Hawks played
Friday night.
"I wasn't happy with the last 50
minutes of our play. They [North
Middlesex] hustled more than we
did," said Revington. "We were
out -skated and'out-bumped."
The Hawks seemed to come on
strong late in the third and dom-
inated the overtime period but the
five minutes wasn't enough to
break the game.
Revington credits the Stars for
playing a hard game saying the
Hawks didn't deserve to win their
first encounter earlier in the season
when the Hawks beat them 6-4.
Exeter's Saturday game against
Mount Brydges was postponed due
to poor weather conditions. They
will see action again when they
visit Seaforth Friday.
Exeter pays tribute to 1994-95 Peewee champions

EXETER - The Exeter Jr "D"
Hawks took a time-out during their
Friday night home game
to share the spot light
with some local chain -
pions.
Last year's Exeter Le-
gion Ladies Auxiliary
Peewee hockey team
stepped on to the ice
during the second inter-
mission of the game to
be recognized for their
accomplishment.
The Exeter Peewees defeated the
Prince Edward County Kings last
season in the Minor
Hockey Association Pee-
wee "CC" Finals to claim
the braggin rights of all
Ontario Champions for
the 1994-94 season.
After beating the Kings
4-2 at home in the cham-
pionship opener and win-
ning 5-4 the following
day, the Peewees trav-
elled to Prince Edward
countjr where they
clinched the third and final game 3-
2 to sweep the series and bring the
OMHA crown to Exet-
er.
Exeter hasn't won an
OMHA Peewee tide
since the 1973-74 sea-
son.
Of the 14 players who
stood underneath the
championship banner
hanging from the arena,
only seven have re-
turned to play another year in the
peewee ranks.
Coach Bob McDonald is coach-
ing the Peewees for his third year
and says the team is very different
this time around.
"There's no com-
parison between the
two. We have a
whole new crew,
you can't compare
them to last year,"
said McDonald.
This season's team
is much bigger and
not as quick as the
fast skating and sharp
passing team of last year.
"Some of them outweigh
me...they're big
boys," said team
manager Al Keys.
"They are not as tal-
ented and they will
have to work hard
together, but if they
play as a team we
can do it again."
So far, the 1995-
96 peewees are 9-5-
2 and have a long
way to go if they
want to match last season's 43-7-6
win/loss/tie record.
"Their chances are
good but they have
to have the will to
win and they will
really have to apply
themselves," said
McDonald.
Among the seven
returnees is goaltend-
er Ryan Sullivan.
With the experience
an Ontario champion-
ship under his belt, Sullivan has

of wining
been a strong factor behind this
year's peewees, and McDonald is
counting on him for a repeat per-
formance.
"He's the backbone of our team
right now," said McDonald.
Whether this year's team will cap-
ture another championship will
have to be seen, but if McDonald
has any say in it, he will be . stand-
ing on the ice of the Rec Centre
during the intermission of another
Hawks game about the same time
next year.
