Traditional gifts with a modern twist
Brenda Burke T -A staff
Just what will you get
Aunt Edna for Christmas
this year? And what
about little Billie, who's
too old for rattles but too
young for Lego? And
then there's Dave, an im-
possibleperson to buy for,
plus Mom, who has
everything, and Spot, the
family mutt.
After checking out local
stores, I've come up with
a brief idea list for good
old Christmas shopping.
If Aunt Edna is into collecting
things, perhaps she'd like a Christ-
mas tree ornament. If she's still a
kid at heart, she may enjoy a 'Surfin
Santa' ornament.
In the early 80's, Christmas balls
were at the peak of their popularity.
A few years later, lighted Christmas
tree ornaments were all the rage.
Now thcre seems to be an ornament
that relates to everyone.
Whether it's Superman in the pri-
vacy of his phone booth or a pewter
rocking horse, you're sure to find
something original, yet useful.
And, according to an Exeter, mer-
chant who sells these gems, some
tree ornaments "have become real-
ly valuable."
Sa what about little Billie, or any
other little kid on your list, for that
matter. What not give a Cloppy
Horsey Squeeze Pet?
"The kids love to play with
them," noted a Zurich store owner
just as a young girl approached to
squeeze all of the horsies in the dis-
play box.
After playing The Lone Ranger
tune, this horse makes galloping
and neighing noises every time you
squeeze it.
Each horse comes with its own
bandana, amide, toothy.grin and a
choice of black/white, grey/white or
brown/white color combinations.
Now we come to Dave, that guy
who, as I've mentioned, is impossi-
ble to buy for.
To keep him warm this winter,
why not give him a hand -loomed
cotton night shirt complete with
guava branch buttons made in Kath-
mandu. At low -calf length, this
blue -striped shirt•comes in different
sizes.
"We like the thick -feeling nature
of it," said the Exeter merchant
who, along with his partner, de-
signed the shirt.
Next on nearly everyone's list is
Mom.
Don't be convinced she has
everything if she hasn't got a Wel-
come Light of Sweden in her win-
dow.
Using old traditions and modern
technology, these Candelabra lights
"arc to be left on until everyone in
the house gets home safely," as one
Exeter store owner puts it, adding
"I've not seen them until this year."
Available in brass or wooden ver-
sions, this Victorian piece of art is
sure to Tight up someone's life at
Christmas time.
Now we can't forget to buy for
Spot, or Sport or Tiah - whoever the
family dog happens to be.
According to a merchant in Hen-
sall, many people spend money on
their pets for Christmas. In fact,
while 1 was photographing these Su-
per Bones, a customer approached
and purchased one of them for his
own dog. (And I told the owner the
main intent of this article was not to
advertise!)
Anyway, he says these bones,
which are smoked and filled with
beef, are new to the area in the last
six months. The best thing about it,
he explained, is the dog will "chew
and chew and chew,' trying to dig
out the beef. sometimes keeping
busy for up to two or three months.
"Whereas a rawhide," he said,
"you give it to him that night and
it's gone."
The bones come in large and
small sizes and are guaranteed to
keep your dog out of trouble until at
least Valentine's Day.
