EXETER - Community Living
South. Huron held their annual
Christmas banquet at the S.H. Rec-
reation Centre in Exeter on Thurs-
day, December 7. Nearly 300 peo-
ple - self -advocates, staff, families,
friends, volunteers and community
members gathered to celebrate with
a turkey dinner and Tots of home-
made desserts. Association presi-
dent Herb Verbeek welcomed eve-
ryone, and Rev. John Boyachek,
assistant pastor of the Baptist
Church, gave the Christmas mes-
sage.
Recognition of volunteers is an
important part of the celebration.
June Pennings, Tinka Bervoets,
Clint Underhill, Roberta Walker,
Barb Consitt and Bruce Perry were
• each presented with a plaque to rec-
ognize their contributions to the as-
sociation and to people in our com-
munity who have developmental or
physical handicaps. They have con-
tributed their time and talents with
assistance in the kitchen, computer/
literacy room, and the resource li-
brary at ARC, with support at
Dashwood Wood Products, through
Partners in Community Living (an
organization of parents and rela-
tives); through one-to-one friend-
ship and support; through service
on the Board of the local, regional
and Provincial Association of Com-
munity Living; and through fund-
raising.
The Order of Alhambra, repre-
sented by Philip Walker, received
special recognition for 27 years of
financial support, amounting to
tens of thousands of dollars for ve-
hicles and equipment at ARC and
in the group homes, wheelchairs
and other assistive devices. Alham-
hrans have also sent Santa Claus to

needs in Huron County. For 13
years now, employees and staff at
ARC have enjoyed an annual hay
ride party at the Alhambra hall,
south of Grand Bend.
Volunteers are the life blood of
any community and here at C.L.S.
Huron, we are especially fortunate
to have the support of so many peo-
ple, to enrich people's lives.
Staff members were also recog-
nized, for two to five years of ser-
vice and five to 20 years of service.
Those honored for 10 years of
service were Executive Director
John Gray, Marlene Wilcox, and
Michele Hoffman. A special pres-
entation was made to Mary Swin-
kels McLellan, senior management
for over 20 years of employment
with this Association.
President Herb Verbeek thanked
everyone who helped to organize
the evening, especially Iris Currell,
C.L.S.H. secretary. He also thanked
the Exeter Girl Guides, who helped
to clear the tables.
Entertainment was provided by
the Friendship, a rapidly growing
(nearly 50) group of self -advocates
and supporters/friends who share
spiritual fellowship in an Ecumeni-
cal atmosphere. Directed by Jan
Easton, the group performed sever-
al Christmas carols, and acted out
the nativity story, costumes and all.
The evening ended with dancing
to Hooks Party Sound, and the
dance floor was crowded as the fun
continued for another successful
event, with the largest attendance in
many years.
