Stars on ice
The Exeter figure skating club participated in the Mooretown Competition on Nov. 25.

2nd in preliminary pairs and individually, Baker placed 5th in preliminary elements and
6th in preliminary B figure skating, and Kristylee Varley placed lst in canfigure C figure
skating and 4th in preliminary elements. Front row, left, Hilda Steele placed,6th in pre -
preliminary elements and 5th in canfigure B figure skating while Michelle Roy placed 7th
in pre -preliminary elements and 6th in canfigure A figure skating. The figure skating club
will compete again in Windsor Jan. 6 and in London Jan.13.
Santa Claus visits Zurich
•
ZURICH - Select Shoes visit-
ed Blue Water Rest Home on
Monday afternoon to show their
selection of footwear for the fall
season. Residents and staff pe-
rused the slipper and casual shoe
assortment. In the evening the Op-
timist Club members, Cubs,
Brownies and Beavers entertained
the residents with Christmas mu -
sip. Audrey Haberer, pianist;
Frances Hartman, Lee Desjardine,
Hubert Thiel, Adrianna DeBont,
Jen Erb, Cub leaders: Nicole Ve-
roude, Julie Becker, Carol Prang,
Brownie leaders; Sandra Desjar-
dine, Cindy Hendrick, Sharon
Miller, Cory Debont, Beaver lead-
ers assisted the children with their
performance. Santa Claus passed
candy canes out to each resident.
The Optimist Club with the help of
Santa, gave the residents a large
box of musical instruments to start
their own musical band. The eve-
ning was complete with hot choco-
late and tidbits.
Tuesday morning Bible Study
was held in the BWRH Apts.
lounge by Rev. Julia Bender, Zu-
rich Mennonite Church. Tuesday
afternoon Bible Study was held in
the Chapel by Rev. Gani Lazaro,
Zurich United Church. Tuesday
evening the Auxiliary visited the
home for their Christmas program
with Alieda Rau as chairperson.
Ashley and Stephanie Rau played
piano solos and Elizabeth Bedard
played a piano solo and sang. Mr.
and Mrs. Santa arrived to distrib-
ute Christmas gifts to each resi-
dent, a lady or gentlemen doll air
freshener for their room.
Wednesday afternoon tea was
served by Gladys Gingerich with
the tables decorated for Christmas
season. Rev. Jack Patterson, Bay-
field United Church conducted
Thursday afternoon Chapel ser-
vice. Fr. Matthias Wronski, St.
Boniface Church, Zurich celebrat-
ed Mass.
Friday afternoon Gladys and her
Merry Makers entertained the resi-
dents with sounds the residents
love most. Mozart Gelinas Sr.
played his banjo and guitar, Har-
vey McDowell made his violin
sing, Elgin Nott kept his violin
well bowed and Gladys VanEg-
mond led the fellows with her pia-,
no and accordion. Vera Thiel, one
of the toe tapping residents,
thanked the group and invited them
to return soon.
Saturday morning Kim Redick a
local teacher of piano and voice
visited with her students Monique
and Stephanie Gelinas, Janet Thiel,
Chrissy Miller, Sharon and Amy
Castle, Judith and Sarah Gardiner
and Brianne Becker. The students
sang solos and duets and coral ar-
rangements for the residents with a
wide assortment of Christmas mu-
sic.

Ruby Fulcher, Rose Merner, Kurt
Gebel, Ruby Bell, Susan Leslie and
Mabel Kyle boarded the wheel-
chair bus with volunteer driver
Glen Thiel for a day at Masonville
Plaza in London. Gladys Ginge-
rich, Anne Thompson, Kim Geof-
frey, Marlene Bell and Margaret
Suplat were volunteer helpers un-
der the direction of Cathy Shantz,
Adjuvant. By their return the resi-
dents eyes were dancing with all
the sights and sounds of the Christ-
mas season after feasting on all the
items in the stores and mall.
The home has been blessed with
the visits from Santa Claus lately,
so the children of the area should
be on their best behavior. He (Bill
Dowson) even made it to the annu-
al Christmas dinner on December
3, much to the amusement of all
those in attendance.

dents at the home.
Our condolences to the family •
and friends of the tate Mrs. Verlyn
Fisher who passed away. at BWRH:
in her 81st year. Verlyn was a resi-
dent of the home the past nine
years.
The residents look forward to an
evening of carolling from members
of St. Peter's RC Church, St. Jo-
seph on December 12 and Theresa
Burr of London will introduce the
residents to Karoke, Christmas
style on December 13.
Crokinole party planned in Varna
The party is set for
December 28.

VARNA - The Crokinole Club
met Tuesday evening. They are
having an open crokinole party on
December 28 at 8 p.m.
Anyone coming is asked to bring
lunch. Everyone is welcome.
UCW
The Varna U.C.W. had its annual
potluck Christmas dinner and pro-
gram last Thursday evening. For-
mer members, regular members,
friends and community members
gather for a delicious supper.
Marg Hayter opened with a hu-
morous diversion of "T'was the
Night Before Christmas". Joyce
Dowson read thank you notes from
the Huron Perth Resource Centre
for the donation and from Eleanor
McAsh, since being a patient in
hospital. President Dowson present-
ed Miriam DeRivers with a Christ-
mas present.
Marg Hayter read a poem. Ruby
Hill read the story of 'Silent Night'
followed by the hymn Marilyn
Kalbfleisch read the scripture. De-
bra Rathwell and Joyce Dowson
performed a duet "Redeeming
Love". Bonnie Roy followed with a
reading and Ruby Hill read the sto-
ry of "Oh Little Town of Bethle-
hem" and then the hymn was sung.
A very funny, yet meaningful
skit entitled "Mission Flight 1995"
was portrayed by Marg Hayter,
Marilyn Kalbfleisch, Bonnie Roy,
Ruby Hill, Shirley Hill and Joan
Beierling. Each one boarding the
plane had different packages enti-
tled "Grudges", "Excuses", "Meant
To's" and "Pride". All had funny
meanings for them, yet there was a
message.
The meeting closed with prayer.
Carol sing
On December 17 there will be a
Christmas pot luck luncheon and
carol sing concert at Goshen
Church. Everyone is welcome.
Gift shop
The Magnolia Manor is adding a
shop called the Plantation Gift
Shop, stocking local hand-crafted
good quality, unique gifts and ac-
cessories. The grand opening is
planned for Easter. Any interested
crafter should contact the Manor at
233-3181.
Church services
Regular church services will be
held December 24, Christmas Sun-
day, at both Varna and Goshen
churches.
The Christmas Eve candlelight
service will be held at Goshen at
7:30 p.m. Bring a candle for each
member of your family. A birthday
cake for Jesus will be served with
coffee during a social time.
Annual church meetings will be
held January 21 In Varna and Janu-
ary 28 in Goshen.
Stas -Lee Seniors.
The Stan -Lee Seniors met at die
Blue Fountain in Clinton for their
Christmas meeting at 6:00, Decem-
ber 6 with 41 people sitting down
trill lovely supper.
After supper, Earl and Martha
Heywood of Wingham entertained
the group for an hour with songs,
accompanied by Earl on his guitar.
He also did some magic tricks,
which everyone enjoyed. Bob Stir-
ling thanked them and presented
them witha gift. Bernice Reid and
Margaret Hayter read a few read-
ings. President Anna thanked
Charles and Bernice Reid for look-
ing after the meeting and eight ta-
bles of euchre were then played.
Prizes were won by: Norene
Hayter, for a marked cup; Ruth
Talbot for the birthday closest to
the date.
Euchre prizes were won by: Hel-
en Pepper, high lady; Dorothy Os-
trom, low lady; Bob Stirling and
Ivan McClymont, high men; W)l-
fred Chuter, low man.
The group decided to bold their
January meeting at 12:30 p.m>;
the Complex on January 3 with
their usual lunch at the beginning,
