Late harvest for area rutabagas
EXETER - When early frost and wet conditions made it impossible for
Exeter Produce to use its harvester to .pick rutabagas near Conc. 2-3, 15
to 20 people were hired a few weeks ago topick the vegetables by hand.
"On a good day we can do a couple of acres," said Darrel Finkbeiner,
of Exeter Produce. "We'll go as long as the weather permits. Time's run-
ning short."
Finkbeiner said "it's very uncommon" to hand-pick a large amount of
rutabagas, which are usually gathered at the end of October. With nearly
half of the 90 acres harvested, Finkbeiner is worried about frost and snow
affecting the vegetables, which can't be picked until about noon every
day due to frost.
"On a good day we can do a couple of acres," he said, adding despite
the weather conditions, the pickers are doing a good job.
"It works out okay," he said, "because people are looking for work."
