Party favours, hot buffet and taxi ride The season of the Advent DASHWOOD - To some of us, the Advent wreath symbolizes the 'real' meaning of Christmas. Con- sisting' of a circle of greens en- closing five candles, this Christian tradition marks the coming of Christ. The wreath originated with early pagan tribes who placed greens around cart wheels in preparation for the return of their Sun God. Like many other festive customs, the tradition of the wreath was adopted by the Christian heritage. Instead of waiting for the blessing of light from the Sun God, Chris- tians now wait for light from heav- en. "In the darkness we Tight a flame of hope," reads an Advent calendar compiled by Mark Neilsen and Arden Mead for Creative Com- munications for the Parish. "Most churches have Advent wreaths," said Pastor John Trem- bulak, of the Zion Lutheran Church in Dashwood. "Candles have al- ways played an important part in Christianity." According to Tremhulak, Tight is a Christian welcoming sign, giving a 'candle in the window' effect. On the first Sunday of the Advent Tradition, which takes place four Sundays before Christmas, (this year on December 3) the first can- dle, the Prophecy Candle. is lit. thus opening the period of waiting. Then each of the remaining candles are lit, one at a time, on Sundays leading up to Christmas. The Beth- lehem Candle is second. the Shep- herd's Candle third, the fourth is the Angel's Candle and the fifth candle is named the Christ Candle. The first, second and fourth can- dles are usually purple, and the third is pink, for joyful Sunday. The last candle lit, the Christ can- dle. is white. The greens of the wreath, always real, symbolize life and the circle shape stands for eter- nity. "People celebrate this at home, too," said Tremhulak, explaining some make their own Christmas Advent wreaths, which portray the movement from darkness to Tight.
