Also honored were Paul and Perry Pooley who have signed profes- sional hockey contracts with the Winnipeg Jets. 25 YEARS AGO December 3, 1970 - One of Huron county's best known residents was the key -note speaker in paying tribute to The Hon. C.S. and Mrs. MacNaughton at "An Evening with Charlie and Addie" at Hu- ron Park. Thursday. Premier John Robarts, a summer resident at Oakwood Park in Ste- phen township said, 'This is an enormous tribute to my member," as he looked out over the crowd of 900. At the annual nomination meeting for the town of Exeter, all posi- tions were tilled by acclamation and after being returned as mayor, Jack Delhridge said, "I'm very disappointed in the residents of the town of Exeter in not coming out tonight". Only six persons other than officials and those nominated attended. 40 YEARS AGO December 4, 1955 - Mrs. Albert Fletcher, whose bequest of $1,000 to South Huron Hospital was announced last week, also left $5,000 to the board of Stewards of Zion United Church and $1,000 to the Zion cemetery. Mayor R.E. Pooley who has never competed in an election before, has been challenged in his hid for a second term by councillor A.L. Snelgrove. Reeve 13i11 McKenzie of Exeter and reeve Jack Morrissey of Ste- phen township are among the five men campaigning for the office of Huron county warden. Arnold Cann was re-elected president of the Usborne township Federation of Agriculture. Plans for a $140,000 dam in Usborne township to provide a water supply for Exeter, a road for the township and a flood control meas- ure for the Ausahle Authority were approved by district officials at a meeting in Parkhill Tuesday evening. 50 YEARS AGO December 4.'1945 -Mr. John Essery who has been associated with the Ushorne and Hibbert Mutual Fire Insurance Company for 54 years, first as director, then as president and then agent has resigned his position. Mr. Kenneth Hockey, SBA, stationed at Sydnt<y, Nova Scotia has received his discharge and will resume his position with E.R. Hop- per. Under the spur of organized effort by the Huron Federation of Ag- riculture, registration of hog producers in Huron county for the vote now being taken on proposals to organize, has reached a total of 1,740. 75 YEARS AGO December 3, 192() - Mr. G.N. Williams, Thames Road, held an auction sale of farm stock and implements. He and Mrs. Williams are moving to Exeter where Mr. Williams will go into partnership with B.M. Francis. Mr. Peter Moir of Concession 2 Ushorne town- ship has purchased the 1(X) acre farm of Mr. P. Case of the London Road North. 100 YEARS AGO December 5, 1895 - Great depravities in fowl thievings are being carried out in some parts of Blanshard township. John Gowan got 50 hens taken in one night. The Conservative convention for West Huron will he held Decem- her 10 when it is said Dr. Weismiller of Hensall will be chosen as candidate. Charles Coates, son of the late Frank Coates has decided to aban- don farm life for a time at least and take a course at the Forest City Business College. Mr. J.A. Stewart interviewed Exeter council regarding a drain on Andrew street. Council will furnish the tile and cover,the,proposed drain while Mr. Stewart will pay for the digging. Large shipments of turkeys were made by W.H. Levert and the Abbott Produce Co. during the week to foreign markets. Tuckersmith council has set their salaries for 1896. The reeve will receive $45 per annum, deputy reeve and councillors each $35, the treasurer $1(X) and the clerk $160.
