THE INTREPID
SNOWMOBiLER
By Craig Nicholson
Over $12 million in new development dollars has been spent on
trails since you last did any serious snowmobiling. 35,000 new trail
markers are in club hands. Everywhere there are new bridges, better
trails, new connections and more signs. In the past year, more trail
work has been completed than at any other time in the history of
organized snowmohiling.
And you know the hest part?
Snowmobilers have yet to experience most of this new
development for themselves. That means there's a whole lot of new
adventure, exploration and discovery waiting for you on Ontario's
snowmobile trails this winter. As good as our riding has been, this
season will be tops.
Welcome to another snowmobiling season and a new edition of
The Intrepid Snowtnohiler. This weekly column is intended to bring
you the latest snowmobiling news, information and opinions to make
your winter as exciting and fun -tilled as possible. Before we get
started let me recap last season's escapades.
I rode almost 10,000 trouble-free kilometers. My tours ranged from
numerous day trips in central and western Ontario to a 3.5(X)
kilometre, 10 day marathon run around Lake Superior. I trailered to
New Brunswick with my wife for a week's riding in March and
completed my last hurrah in the mountains northwest of Vancouver.
All in all, a most satisfying and pleasurable winter.
I'm not bragging, merely confirming that I'm a very active
snowmohiler. It's important that you know where I'm corning from:
this is a hands-on touring column geared to the average recreational
snowmohiler. It's not a performance column and you won't find any
tech talk. It's just me writing about what I've seen and experienced. 1
hope it helps you.
My travels outside Ontario have convinced me that there isno better
place to snowmobile than here at home. That's not to say there aren't
great trails elsewhere, hut you don't need to trailer for hours to some
far away, out -of -province destination. instead. why not spend that
highway time on a sled in Ontario
To get the big provincial picture, you need three tools: a Trail
Permit; a TOP (Trans Ontario Provincial) Trail Map and a phone
number: 1 -800 -263 -SLED.
A Trail Permit will cost you the same as last year: $80 by
December 1st and $1(X) thereafter. The price may not have changed,
but the trails are Netter and what's more. you'll also get a $2 discount
coupon for ordering the best trail survival hook on the market,
"Getting Back". it's a must read for snowmobilers!
There's more. A new SIedPLUS Card comes free with each permit.
It offers you savings at many local trailside pitstops. Plus. - maybe
that explains the name - your SIedPLUS Card carries a black sticker
that says: "Scorecard 1-8(X)-463-4909". This identifier means that
your card is also good year round at several dozen national
hospitality and service chains (see TOP Trail Map listing). In my
travels, i've saved enough using SIedPLUS to pay for my Trail
Permit. Not a had deal! Get your permit from the local club where
you do most of your riding.
While you're at it, ask for a TOP Trail map - free with your permit
purchase. intended as a tour planning device and for a clear overview
of Ontario's provincial snowmobile trail system. the TOP map will
help you to decide where you want to ride and indicate the main
through corridors. The map's been improved for 1996: a new grid
overlay and alphabetical town listing make it easier to locate
unfamiliar places.
Undecided about where to tour in Ontario'' A quick call to the
Snowmohiling Hot Line (shouldn't that he Cold Line'') will net tour
books and other valuable snowmobile planning information. So just
like me, you'll be ready to roll when the snow falls.
Until next time, happy trails and remember: Sled Smart - Ride
Safe. Ride Sober; Bring A Buddy to Snowarama. For club or driver
training information. contact the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile
Clubs (OFSC) at (705) 739-7669. To plan your Ontario tour, call
1 -800 -263 -SLED. For Snowarama call 1-8(X)-461-3391.
