SH hosts basketball tournament
EXETER - The South Huron sen-
ior and junior basketball teams got
their first taste of competition dur-
ing an Optimist invitational bas-
ketball toumament held at South
Huron.
The senior boys hosted eight oth-
er teams on November 25 and 26 to
kick off their first competitive
games of the season.
Bryan McAllister led the scoring
in their first match -up with 20
points, followed by Dwayne
McNab and Marty Debruyn with
nine points each but it wasn't
enough to beat eventual tournament
champions London Oakridge losing
69-53.
South Huron defeated London
Montcalm 63-53 with McAllister
scoring 19 points backed up by Joe
Marshall with 15 and Debruyn with
13 points.
In the consolation final, South
Huron jumped out to a 32-2 lead at
the end of the first quarter coasting
to a 86-47 victory over Central Hu-
ron with ten different Panthers con-
tributing in the scoring drive.
Coach Terry O'Rourke said this
year's senior boys team is one of
the most experienced he has ever
coached displaying good defensive
smarts with the offensive ability to
penetrate the key and get to the
basket.
"I'm impressed with what I've
seen so far. I think our chances in
this league are good this year," said
O'Rourke.
The junior basketball team hosted
their annual tournament last week-
end winning one out of three
games.
Despite a great first-half per-
formance by the defense, led by
Luke Sims and David Farquhar
with 14 steals, the Panthers lost
42-36 to Lambton Central.
Saturday morning, Kris Lepping-
ton, Christian Stuckless and trevor
Boersma put on a rebounding clinic
while Sims and Darryl Romphf
added 10 points each to lead the
Panthers to the consolation final
with a 40-35 win over College Av-
enue from Woodstock.
In the bronze medal game,
Romphf had an impeccable shoot-
ing game with 25 points going 100
per cent from the foul line and 75
per mit off the. floor.
1 i(ighiske46.l d 12 points and
Nick-MeLeod scored the first bas-
ket of his competitive career but it
wasn't enough to beat London
Christian who came back in the
fourth quarter to win 50-46.
Coach George McEwan said the
tournament was the first com-
petitive experience for many of the

"A lot of these guys just don't
have the competitive experience so
we're going to concentrate on fine-
tuning the fundamentals," said
McEwan.
However, McEwan said when it
comes to learning more about the
game, he is no exception.
South Huron lost to London
Christian by a mere four points af-
ter the Panthers led in scoring for
half of the game.
"They started to outshoot us in
the second half because we were
getting tired. As a coach I should
have gone to a z'ne defense in-
stead of playing man to man," said
McEwan. "Wnen I talk about fine-
tuning it also applies to me too."
