Times Advocate, 1995-12-06, Page 19South Huron hockey team wins first game of the season . CLINTON - The Soutb Huron Boys Hockey team won their first game of the season defeating the Clinton Redmen 4-3 on November 24. The Panthers got on the score- boardfirst but struggled getting out of their own end allowing Clinton to pull ahead by two. South Huron scored before the end of the sec- ond period and notched two more goals in the third to squeak out a come -from -behind victory over the Redmen. Goal scorers for South Huron were Chad Gilfillian with two, along with Jeff Glover and Jarrett Geoffrey. Coach Pete Heeney said the Pan- thers played a disciplined game by staying out of the penalty box giv- ing South Huron an advantage on power plays. "The kids wanted to play hockey and that's exactly what they did," said Heeney. After getting off to a slow start last season, losing their first four games, the Panthers went on a five game winning streak on their way to a Huron Perth championThip. But with only six players return- ing to the lineup this year, Heeney said it's difficult to predict this sea- son's outcome. "It's still early and I don't know much about the other teams yet," he said. Judging by their first game, Hee- ney said the Panthers have a well balanced offense but need to work on defensive play in their own end. The Panthers play their home games at the South Huron Recrea- tion Centre on Tuesday afternoons at 2 p.m. Exeter hosts junior curling tournament EXETER - The Exeter Curling Club hosted a junior mens and womens regional tournament over the weekend as 16 teams from the Ontario Curling Association com- peted in the double knock -out play - down. In the mens division,Ilderton won the "A" championship and Burlington won the "13" title. In the womens division, St Catha- rines won the "A" championship and London won the "B" champi- onship. Lucan on a five game winning streak LUCAN - The Lucan Irish defeat- ed Belmont 6-2 Wednesday upgrad- ing their win streak to five. George Stephens scored twice for the Irish who exploded in the sec- ond period with four goals. Steve Hudson, Chad Greenlee, Mike Robb and Chad Lambourn added singles. With 41 shots on goal, the Irish were poised to blow Belmont away but their goalie kept the score to a respectable level. Coach Scott Bogart said his team has finally found their niche after juggling different lines for almost half of the season. "We're playing better as a team. I knew it would be just a matter of time before things started click- ing," said Bogart. "We have some set lines that we like and are work- ing for us." Now halfway through their sea- son, Bogart feels the team has the fundamentals down and will now focus on fine-tuning power play and penalty killing units. Their next two games will put their winning streak to the test as they go up against Burford in Lucan on Wednesday and Seaforth next Friday. Burford are first in their division and the Irish are trailing Seaforth by only one point in the Morenz di- vision. "We beat them (Seaforth before( but whether we'll have their num- ber on Friday, I don't know. We'll just have to wait and see," said Bo- gart S Shuffleboard Hensall November 28 6 game winners Jim Davis Hazel McEwan Russell Ferguson Isabel Rogerson Dave Woodward Lorne Archer Pat Davis Dean Gibson Notice: No shuffling second week of December. EXETER - Revenge is sweet, and the Exeter Chiefs had a taste of it at the South Huron Rec- reation Centre Saturday night as they defeated Port Stanley 4-2. Port Stanley handed the Chiefs their only defeat in a close 5-4 contest the first time these two teams met. The re -match was no exception. Both teams seemed evenly matched exchanging an equal amount of shots on net in the fast end -to -end -game. Ben Geiger scored first for the Chiefs after taking an assist from Marty Debruyn in the first period. The one goal lead was short-lived as Port Stanley answered back quickly with a goal of their own. Exeter blasted two shots off the goal post and Richard Masse kept the Port Stanley forwards at bay with some bone -crushing body checks but the game remained scoreless throughout the second pe- riod. Debruyn scored the go-ahead goal for Exeter late in the third period when he tipped in a shot from Scott Barclay, but the persistent Port Stanley tied the game at two with only three minutes left in the game. 1 1 1 1 1 1 With overtime looming, the Chiefs pressed hard creating a few good opportunities including a scramble in front of the Port Stanley net that saw the puck dribble along the goal -line before being cleared by a defenseman. Rob Kobayashi came close to scoring the tie breaker when he found himself alone with the puck in the slot but couldn't get a shot away. The deciding goal came,in the dying seconds of the third when Gavin Snell took a pass from Ko- bayashi off the blue line and blasted a slapshot from outside the face-off circle. The puck found the back of the net with only 37 seconds left on the clock. Determined to the end, Port Stanley pulled their goalie for the extra attacker but Barclay and Geiger teamed up seconds later for the empty net goal se- curing a well deserved victory. Head coach Henri Debruyn credited Port Stanley for playing a hard game and admitted the game could have gone either way. "It was close right down to the end, but it feel% good to win," he said. The coaches kept a short leash on their players as both teams kept their penalties to a mere ten min- utes proving a disciplined hockey game in the Juve- nile league is possible. The Chiefs play at home again next Friday when they meet Langton.
