Four SHDHS students represent
Huron in volleyball all star game
Darryl Romphf, Luke Sims, Bryan McAllister and Adam Jean are volleyball all stars
Chris Skalkos T -A staff
EXETER - The gymnasium at
South Huron District High School
was the scene of some high quality
volleyball as SHDHS hosted the
Huron -Perth All Star Volleyball
match last Tuesday.
Two representatives from the jun-
ior and senior volleyball teams
from each high school joined forc-
es in a Huron vs. Perth showdown
best three out of five match play.
Darryl Romphf and Luke Sims
from South Huron were chosen to
play for the Huron junior team
coached by Audrey Bos from F.E.
Madill, and Adam Jean and Bryan
McAllister were picked to play for
the Huron seniors coached by Chris
Ritchie and Rich Gingerich from
Central Huron.
The junior teams were so evenly
matched it took five games to de-
cide a winner with the last game
going to rally points.
Huron took the first game 15-10,
before losing the next two 7-15 and
11-15. A 15-8 victory sent the
match into the fifth and final game
with Perth claiming the junior title
after a quick 15-9 victory.
The seniors needed only three
games to decide a winner with Hu-
ron winning three straight 15-9, 15-
13 and 16-14.
However, the numbers in this se-
ries were deceiving. Huron mount-
ed a huge come from behind vic-
tory in the second game and
overcame a nine point deficit in the
third game sending it into extra
points before claiming the senior
victory.
Junior Volleyball coach Scott
Halpenny said he, and senior coach
Joe Jankowski, had the difficult
task of choosing two players to
represent Huron but they were not
disappointed by the four students'
performance.
"Darryl played a good offensive
game with some strong spiking and
powerful serves," said Halpenny.
"Luke played smart around the net
and had a good passing game even
though he was playing with a
shoulder injury."
Halpenny said he was looking for
more than just talent when he
picked Romphf and Sims to repre-
sent South Huron.
"Those two showed their com-
mitment and leadership throughout
the season and that was obvious
Tuesday night," he said.
Jankowski echoed Halpenny's
comments crediting both Adam
Jean and Bryan McAllister for be-
ing a contributing factor in Huron's
all sear victory over Perth.
"Both are good athletes and great
team players," said Jankowski.
"Whenever you see your players
performing that well...as a coach
you can't help but take some of the
credit. I was proud of them," he
said.
This was only the second time
the two counties organized an all
star game and it was the first time
juniors were included. Halpenny
said the event was a huge success
as over 200 people filled the large
gymnasium to take in some vol-
leyball.
During the intermission between
the junior and senior games, spec-
tators were treated to a special
"volleyball spectacular" featuring
a two on six volleyball match be-
tween two professional beach vol-
leyball players and a team of six
from the South Western Ontario
Volleyball Association.
Jim Cooke, three year OUAA all
star player for the University of
Waterloo and first place contender
in the 1991 North American vol-
leyball championships teamed up
with Mark Heese, the number one
ranked beach volleyball player in
Canada, and ranked eighth in the
world, to take on the six man team
composed of former SHDHS
players and graduates.
The match -up was an awesome
display sof raw power and court
movement as the duo covered the
entire court with ease to beat the
team of six 15-10 before losing the
second game 14-16 after a furious
exchange of sideouts.
Halpenny said bringing in the
professionals during intermission
was designed to promote the sport
of volleyball and shed some light
on the relatively new game of
beach volleyball which will be an
official full medal event at the 1996
olympics.
"We thought it would motivate
the kids who are already enjoying
the sport to see what can be ac-
complished with a lot of dedication
and hard work," Halpenny said.
"Watching the pros play was ed-
ucational and entertaining and it
was certainly an eye-opener for a
lot of those kids," he said.
Adan Jean goes up in the
air for a spike during Tues-
day's senior all star game at
SHDHS.

Hawks "shellshock" Delhi 10-2
The Exeter Junior "D" Hawks stretch their winning streak to 17 games
EXETER - The Exeter Hawks are
now 17-0 after sheltshocking the
Delhi Travellers at the South Hu-
ron Recreation Centre Friday night.
The Hawks showed no mercy on
the struggling Delhi team em-
barking on a 10 goal scoring fren-
zy. Delhi narrowly avoided being
shut out, scoring one goal in the
second period.
Ben McCann, Ryan Chamney
and Chris Kennedy led the scoring
drive with a pair of goals each. Ge-
off Mayer, Chris McDonald, Steve
Farquhar and Shaync Robinson
scored singles.
The prettiest goal of the game
came midway through the third pe-
riod when Robinson took a pass
from Nathan Burns and tip -toed his
way through a mob of Delhi
players before swinging around the
net and feeding it to McCann who
one -timed past the bewildered Del-
hi goalie.
Despite out -shooting their op-
ponents 53-11 head coach Dave
Revington said his team still could
have played better.
"I wasn't that thrilled with our
play especially early on in the
game. I thought we were too com-
placent," said Revington.
Knowing Delhi was coming in to
the contest with o ly four wins un-
der their belt, Revington made line -
changes liberally and decided V
rest his star net minder Darren
Kints, employing both back-up
goalies, Jason Glavin and David
Nahrgang.
"Glavin is a good goaltender and
he deserved a chance to play. I'm
not worried about playing him,"
said Revington.
Nahrgang's 20 minutes between
the posts was his first time playing
since he injured his knee early in
the season. His performance con-
vinced the coaches he was more
than ready to return.

ZURICH - When you mention
the word bowling, nine year-old
Tyler Markham smiles and his
eyes twinkle.
After joining the Y.B.C. team
last year, Tyler is now bowling a
130 average and his highest score
is an impressive 193.
A few short years ago, bowling
for this youngster didn't seem pos-
sible. Tyler was born with spin-
abifida and has been confined to a
wheelchair for his entire life. But
with the help of Tony Bedard, own-
er of Zurich Town and Country
Lanes, Tyler has become a com-
petitive bowler.
Bedard constructed a device that
allows Tyler to bowl in his wheel-
chair. The metallic tubular ramp is
designed to help physically chal-
lenged people whp don't have the
strength or mobility to release a
bowling ball down the alley.
The bowling ramp enables Tyler
to bowl with his friends and he en-
joys being a vital part of the
Y.B.C. team bowling in the bantam
division.
It looks easy, but according to
Tyler, he only makes it look that
way."
First of all you need skill, and
concentration is still important if
you want to throw real good
strikes," said Tyler.
The trick, he confesses, is in his
approach.
"I have good stopping co-
ordination because 1 can't cross the
line," he said.
Bedard also constructed another
ramp for tyler to access the lane -
way platform. He said both were
easy to build and he feels more
physically challenged bowlers
would try the sport if other pm-
prietors made the ramp available.
"I'd build more of these things if
we had more bowlers who needed
them," said Bedard.
Tyler has been supported by the
local bowlers in Zurich who en-
courage him to play competitively
but Bedard said he was not sure
how the Ontario Five Pin Bowlers'
Association would react if he ever
qualified for a provincial tourna-
ment.
"Some would say [the ramp]
gives him an unfair advantage but I
tried bowling with it and it didn't
help my average," Bedard said. "I
think these people have as much
right to bowl [competitively) as I
do:
Bowling isn't the only sport Tyl-
er enjoys. Despite his physical
condition, this sports minded
youngster has tried a variety of
recreational activities such as golf,
which he plays with special clubs,
t -ball, swimming and tennis.
Even the great Canadian sport of
ice hockey is not out of this de-
termined athlete's reach. Tyler
played out of the Zurich minor
hockey system as a goalie. Bracing
himself on his knees, he used only
his arms to stop the puck.
In fact, Tyler said one of his
greatest moments was when he re-
corded a shut out against the long
time rival Stephen Township team
in 1993.
'That felt pretty good," he added.
Tyler doesn't consider his phys-
ical condition an obstacle. He has
enjoyed an active life participating
in many activities his able-bodied
friends do and will probably con-
tinue to do so for many years.
"I'm not afraid to try new
things," said Tyler. "I'm pretty
good in this chair."

The Hawks are enjoying a seven
day break before they return tat ac-
tion this Friday when they: will
square off against North Mid-
dlesex at home.
"We're going to get some rest
and let our players with minor in-
juries heal and then we're going to
go from there," said Revington.
Exeter defeated North Middlesex
twice already this season with
scores of 7-3 and 6-4. But despite
holding up last place in Morenz di-
vision, Revington said most of their
losses have been only by one goal
and the Hawks will not be taking
them lightly.
