Although the inter- national mailing guide- lines have passed, you can still write to Santa Claus at North Pole, HO HO HO. "We try to ac- ' commodate (local 1 letters) right up to the last min- ute," said Ah- rens, adding "We do it company -wide across Canada now." Many children write their letters to Santa at school and the Exeter post office directs about 200 of them to the North Pole every year. On an average day the post office receives 7,000 to 10,000 letters. Af- ter a quiet summer, in September the amount of mail begins to in- crease until it at least doubles dur- ing the three-week stretch before Christmas. "We've been seeing Christmas parcels for a month now," said Ahrens. Because more mail must be cleared through customs at this ! time of year, he ex- plained, the process is slowed down and therefore mailing guidelines are earlier. Normally a parcel spends one day being cleared at customs. For the Christmas sea- son, Ahrens expects the post office to sell 14,000 Greet More stamps to go with Greet More envelopes which display postai code boxes. Sending Christmas mail this way costs 40 cents per stamp, which works out to a dis- count of five cents per envelope. As for other Christmas mail, said Ahrens, "Most people try to send it regular mail because that's the cheapest." However, there is some demand for faster mail at this hectic time of year. A two-day Express Post and one -day Priority Courier is avail- able and cost varies according to package or letter weight and the distance it is mailed. There are also special Christmas stamps to use including Canadian, United Stats and International ver- sions.
