After renovations and the construction of an addition, the 108 -year-old town hall has found •new life in the 90's by housing the municipal offices and council chambers. Architect Terry Markevitz de- signed the renovations allowing for future expansion of the civic area and attempted to maintain the his- torical integrity of the hall. Much of the original woodwork, floors and windows were refurbished and the interior colors reflect the his- toric period the hall dates back to. According to Mayor Ben Hoo- genboom, the project has been com- pleted within its budget. The fur- nishings however, were not included in this budget and ran nearly 70 per cenTover the allocat- ed reserve funds. The renovation project for the hall was put in motion in April, 1993 and the first phase of the re- juvenation of the corner was given the go-ahead in July, 1994 by a 5-4 council vote, broken by former Mayor Bruce Shaw. An October 1994 telephone poll conducted by the T -A contacted 60 homes asking, "Do you support town council's plans to renovate the Olde Town Hall into a new mu- nicipal office and library complex?" The results of the poll indicated 57 per cent of those polled were in fa- vor of the project while 30 per cent were opposed and 13 per cent un- decided. The corner committee is con- cerned not only the town hall but also the library and former police station. Completion of Olde Town Hall renovations wind up Phase 1 of the town square project. Phase 11, dealing with the public library, is currently in the planning stages. Hoogenboom said although en- gineer reports indicate the building is in good structural condition, the biggest concern is accessibility but council anticipates the province will give municipalities flexibility regarding making all public build- ings accessible. Council also hopes funding will be available for a centennial library project. Comer Committee member Joe Rider, at left and Mayor Ben Hoogenboom accept a gift from Shirley Perry of two Exeter scenic paintings. Above, Mike Brintnell of Mike's Signs puts the fin- ishing touches on the town crest that will be displayed in council chambers. The new Olde Town Hall is one of Exeter's architectural focal points.
