An interview with jolly old Saint Nick
Santa took time out of his busy schedule on Sunday afternoon to answer some
questions that every child or people young at heart ,would love to know.
Santa takes a nap in preparation for the Easter Santa Claus
Parade Saturday, which starts at the South Huron Recreation
Centre at noon. Santa will return to the Rec Centre equipped
with treat bags for children at 1:30.
Reporter: So, what do you think
of the snow?
Santa: Oh, I think it's beautiful!
Reporter: What do you have to
do to get ready for the Santa Claus
Parade?
Santa: Oh, I have to get all my

Santa: No, I hope not. I don't Reporter: Do you have to do any -
think so.
Reporter: Hopefully we have
some for the parade.
Santa: Right. Right on.
thing to the sleigh to get it ready'?
Santa: Not too much to the
sleigh. It's all been taken care of.
It's all been painted up, repaired.
Reporter: What do you like best Reporter. Raw eggs?
about the parade?
Santa: What I like about the pa-
rade best is the little kids coming to
see Santa.
Reporter. What is the funniest
thing that ever happened to you
with kids? You know, when kids sit
on your knee and (tell) you what
they want for Christmas?
Santa: I think the funniest thing
was...The funniest thing, that's
hard. They're all funny. They all
come along and give you a big hug
and hope they get what they ask for
for Christmas.
Reporter: Has anyone ever pulled
your beard?
Santa: Some of the bigger kid's.
Reporter: Do they ever ask you
what you want for Christmas?
Santa: (Shakes his head.)
Reporter: They never do.
Santa: No.
Reporter: So, as far as getting
ready for Christmas, what do you
have left to do for the big day''
Santa: It's just about ready now
for Christmas. All set to go. What
we need now is lots of snow. If we
don't have any snow, I'll have to
come around in my plane.
Reporter. In your plane?
•
Santa: Yes....Batman plane.
Reporter: So, what about the rein-
deer? How are they doing?
Santa: Oh, they're fattened up.
Rudolph is just raring to go.
Reporter: Do you have any re-
quests front•the reindeer? What do
they want to see2.Do you.give thein
Christmas presents?
Santa: Yeah, I always give them
Christmas presents.
Reporter: Carrots to munch on?
Santa: Carrots to munch on, yeah.
A few raw eggs.
Santa: Yeah.
Reporter. I guess some of the
kids leave carrots, don't they?
Santa: Oh yes, they do.
Reporter. They leave a snack for
you.
Santa: Yeah, a snack for me, a
snack for the reindeer.
Reporter. Why do you wear a red
suit? Why not purple or black?
Why red? Is it your favorite color?
Santa: That is my favorite color,
right. Mrs. Claus likes red. That's
why I wear it.
Reporter: How is Mrs. Claus?
Santa: Oh, she's good, she's
good.
Reporter. What does Mrs. Claus
do to help you get ready for Christ-
mas?
Santa: Oh, she's more or less a
supervisor.
Reporter: It's a big help, is it?
Santa: It certainly is. It certainly
is.
Reporter. So, at the North Pole, is
there snow right now?
Santa: Lots of snow, um-hmm.
Lots of Eskimos up there.
Reporter: Are you getting any let-
ters yet from the kids?
Santa: Oh yes! Thousands of let-
ters.
Reporter: And what do a lot of
them say? What do the kids want
this year?
Santa: First of all they wish me a
very, very merry Christmas and
hope I get around safe and return
safe and hope I bring what they ask
for.
Reporter: What are some of the
popular requests as far as toys go?
Santa: Batman. Machine guns.
Reporter.
girls?
What about for the .
Santa: Yeah. It takes the about 12
hours to do the whole world. The
reindeer are very fast. They fly.
Santa: The girls? Dolls.
Reporter: When you're getting all
the toys ready, how many elves do
you have to help you out?
Santa: I have 102.
Reporter: What do they eat be-
fore they go?
Santa: Oh, they eat cabbages to
get 'em going, Carrots. Oats.
Reporter: And the littlest elf, Reporter. So, what's the best
thing for the kids to leave?
what's his name?
Santa: His name is uh...Charlie.
Santa: They eat lots of seal.
Reporter:
job?
And what' Charlie's
Santa: Charlie's job is he's the
foreman. He oversees everyone so
everything's done right.
Reporter: So, what are the elves
doing today?
Santa: The elves are resting today
for the big rush.
Reporter: When do they start get-
ting really busy making the toys?
Santa: About a week before
Christmas. They're making toys all
year 'round but a week before
Christmas for the special orders.
Reporter: What makes this
Christmas special compared to all
the other Christmases you've been
through'?
Santa: Oh, they're all really about
the same actually. Every Christmas
is very special.
— Reporter: So, when you go to the
kids' houses, do you still use the
chimneys?
Santa: Oh yes, most of the time
and if they haven't got 'em I go in
through the door or window, what-
ever's open.
Reporter: And, do you have to
tell the reindeer to be quiet?
Santa: Oh yes! Don't make a
sound to wake the kids. Don't
make any sound.
Reporter: How long does it take
you to do the whole world? Are
you going all night long?
Reporter: Seal?
Santa: Yeah. We have a lot of
seal up in the north bay. It's whale
blubber.
Reporter: Do they have to wear
sweaters to keep warm? The rein-
deer?
Santa: Oh, not really, no.
They've got a good fur coat.
They're well fattened up.
Reporter: What do they like the
kids to leave them for a snack?
Santa: Oh, carrots are nice. Glass
of milk is nice.
Reporter: What do you like for
snacks?
Santa: I like a cup of coffee. San-
ta's coffee. Red. Red coffee.
Reporter: If your suit gets dirty.
where do you send it:'
Santa: Oh, Mrs. Claus washes it.
No problems there. Santa's suit
never gets dirty. It's very clean.
Reporter: Is there anything else
you want to say about Christmas,
Santa Claus?
Santa: Yeah, I'd like for all the
kids to be good and especially on
Christmas Eve, go to bed ear-
ly...and don't make a sound.
Reporter: And don't get their par-
ents up too early?
Santa: And don't get their parents
up too early. No earlier than, 1
would say, 4:00 in the morning.
Reporter: Good advice.
Christmas songs get Blue Water
residents in the holiday spirit
ZURICH - The Grand Cove Sing-
ers visited Blue Water Rest Home
on Wednesdag afternoon and enter-
tained the residents with Christmas
songs. Choir director Anne Didier
kept everyone in tune with Irene
Kennedy on the piano. "Going
Home For Christmas", "Beneath
the Mistletoe" and "Hawaiian
Christmas Day" were just a few of
the melodies. Mel Norton sang
"Winter Wonderland," Cathy
Maggs sang "When a Child is
Born" and the residents joined in
for many of their favorite numbers.
Anne sang a song about a little boy
who did not get any gifts for Christ-
mas because he was net a very
well-behaved little boy, which
brought a tear to the eye and mem-
ories of yesteryear to a few very
well-behaved residents.
