FAMILY Times -Advocate, November 29, 1995 Page 9 thrlstmas Bureau volunteers Raymond Soper and Tina Visscher display donations by an An- pl tree at Sam the Record Man in Exeter. Huron County Bureau collecting this week EXETER - This week the Exeter 'entecostal Tabernacle will be 'pen from Monday to Friday from a.m. to 5 p.m. to collect :oys, clothes, food and money donations for needy families. "There's obviously al- ways been (a) need," said volunteer Tina Visscher, adding "The churches are going to have to step in where the government is not able to." Every second y ar, the project ro- t es to a different c rch in Exeter. The bureau be- g to advertise in early November a with the help of four or five v unteers, it will collect donations t s week and distribute them the f lowing week, which tends to be a rop-off period as well. "We don't have more (vol- unteers) because of confidential- ity," said Visscher, adding numbers are used to identify people who re- ceive donations. The Children's Aid Society of Huron County sends lists of family names to the bureau in advance so articles can be organized. Un- wrapped gifts are preferred so they can be sorted according to age groups. "What we're lack- ing, we go out and buy," said Viss- cher, explaining because people tend to donate for the four, five and six-year-old age group, more ar- ticles are needed for teens. The most popular toy donated last year was the barbie doll. Extra toys were given to the Salvation Army and whenever shortages oc- cur, bureaus transfer articles to each other. What the Exeter bureau didn't lack last year was food. "Some bureaus have trouble with food," said Visscher. "Our bureau has been quite generous." "Any food left over at the last of the week, we give it to the Food Bank downtown," added volunteer Raymond Soper. But overall, last year's Christmas Bureau donations were down in Ex- eter and organizers said it was due to donation times being moved ahead by one week. Visscher said the new donation dates will bekept "because it's too hard on the vol- unteers" to work the week before Christmas. Community churches, on a ro- tating basis, along with the Chil- dren's Aid Society, have been working together for more than 35 years on the project that provides children with new toys and clothes, and their families with food. Each child receives a toy and clothing to the value of ap- proximately $40 and a $15 food voucher is issued for each family member. Last year the Christmas Bureaus in Exeter, Seaforth, Clinton, Gode- rich and Wingham provided for 1110 children in 495 families. 424 MAIN ST.
