Better value for taxpayer dollar
EXETER - Provincial Auditor of
Ontario Erik Peters and Helen
Johns MPP, Huron both want to
see better value for taxpayer's
money.
Premier Mike Harris and Johns
made a commitment during the
election campaign to bring real
change to Ontario. They called for
"smaller, smarter government,
lower taxes, less spending. real
welfare reform and more jobs."
In his 1995 annual report, Peters
states:
"To survive. it will be necessary
for programs, agencies and entire
ministries to compete for resourc-
es. Those that are most accounta-
ble for their performance and can
hest demonstrate their effective-
ness will have a much better
chance of surviving."
The Harris government has al-
ready taken steps to ensure taxpay-
ers are getting better value for
their money. The various minis-
tries have already found 1.9 billion
dollars worth of savings in their
budgets.
Peter's report dealt strictly with
the actions the Bob Rae New
Democrats when they were in
power, yet echoes the goals of the
Harris government. Peters told the
.media, "I am pleased to note that
the new government has taken ac-
tion on many of our -recommenda-
tions."
Peter's report also stresses,
"good government both justifies
Council considers school
board partnership
GRAND BEND - The Lambton County Board of Education request-
ed Grand Bend Council consider entering into a partnership with the
school board during a council meeting Monday. •
The school board is looking at ways to share the costs of its assets by
enhancing the gym and information/resource facilities as a community
centre at the Grand Bend Public School to meet the needs of the stu-
dents and area residents.
"There are a lot of things we need to look at in terms of cost accessi-
bility, but we are considering the partnership to see if it makes sense
for us to participate in it." said Mayor Cam Ivey.
and reinforces public trust."
