Three Exeter teams win
medals in tournament
Exeter Junior "C" team wins gold medal, Novice Red, and
Tween White teams capture silver medals during tourney
Chris Skalkos T -A staff
EXETER - The Exeter and Area
Ringette Association hosted a 32
team tournament over the weekend
with three out of the seven teams
representing the Exeter area win-
ning medals.
Over 400 girls, ranging in ages
from seven to 16 participated in
this year's tournament
featuring teams from
Owen Sound,
Oshawa, Dorchester,
Woolwich, Walker-
ton, Goderich, Mitch-
ell, London, St. Clem-
ents, Forest, Seaforth
and Kitchener -
Waterloo.
For Exeter, the Jun-
ior "C" team captured
the gold medal beat-
ing London 12-5, Seaforth 6-5 and
Woolwich 8-1. The Novice Red
team won the silver medal after de-
feating Exeter White 5-3, and Lon-
don 10-8, before losing to Dor-
chester 9-6. The Exeter Tween
Whites also took home a silver
medal after tying the Exeter Tween
Red team 5-5, winning over St
Clements 7-4 and losing to Wool-
wich 5-0.
Exeter Ringette Association pres-
ident, Julie Ritchie said she was
slightly surprised with the Exeter
Junior "C" team clinching the gold
medal because they were under-
dogs going into the tournament.
"The Juniors played outstanding
ringette to win gold considering
"Every

they had a slow start in the regular
season," she said, crediting rookie
goaltender Ke1Ii Dayman for keep-
ing the team together with a solid
performance between the pipes.
The medal race in the Tween di-
vision was too close to be decided
by win/loss ratios as both Exeter
Tween teams finished with an
equal amount of
points in their divi-
sion. Tournament or-
ganizers had to de-
cide the silver medal
winner through a
mathematical for-
mula taking into con-
sideration goals
scored for and
against.
The two Exeter
Tween teams were so
evenly matched, they played to a
five all tie when they met Sunday
morning during their scheduled
tournament match -up.
The Tween game was ringette at
it's best as both teams exchanged
an even amount of shots on net in
the fast paced back and forth con-
test peppered with goal mouth
scrambles and shots bouncing off
the goal posts at both ends of the
rink.
Goal scoring sensation, Kerri Ful-
ton scored all five of the Red
team's goals, three of which were
unassisted. Laura skinner and
Crystal Davis assisted Fulton on
the other two goals.

tle more spread out for the White
team. Melanie Grant scored first as-
sisted by Catherine Bergmann and
Iris Dineen. Sarah Hodge, Krista
Dayman and Bergmann also
scored for the White team with as-
sists from McMillen, Grant and
Leeanne Erb.
Grant scored the tying goal un-
assisted with only 6:57 remaining
on the clock to even out the scoring
at five.
Greg Dayman, coach for the
Tween Whites said the game was
an even contest from start to finish.
"They were so even it was un=
real...It would have been nice to
win but the single point was alright.
I'd rather tie than lose," he said.
Jim Regier, coach for the Tween
Reds echoed Dayman's comments
claiming neither team had an edge
over the other.
"Whey both teams play that wall
a break could make the game but
nobody got that break," he said.
The Red team almost got the
break they were looking for when
the Tween White goalie was sub-
stituted after injuring her thumb.
But with only 2:24 left to play the
Red team didn't get a chance to
test the cold goalie.
Ritchie and Association organiz-
ers agreed the tournament was an
overwhelming success.
"Everything ran smoothly and
most of the teams expressed inter-
est in returning again next year,"
said Ritchie.

in the semi-finals at Saturday's
W.O.S.S.A tournament.
The pool was hosted by Arthur
Voden school in St.Thomas
where the junior boys faced St.
Thomas Parkside, winning both
games. Playing against London
Oakridge, SHDHS was defeated
both times and split in games
against Sarnia St. Clair.
The junior boys came out ahead
of St.Clair in point differential
and were defeated in both games
against Woodstock Collegiate,
giving the team a record of five
wins and three losses and taking
them into the semi-finals.
South Huron did not fair well
against Wingham F.E. Madill in
the semi-final, beaten in two
games straight. London Laurier
faced London Oakridge in a tight
match with Laurier going on to
play F.E. Madill in a very excit-
ing final game.
Coach Scott Halpenny was
pleased with South Huron's ef-
forts in the tournament, crediting
the team as a whole and Darryl
Romphf in particular with a very
steady performance as mid -
blocker.
"1 was really pleased with how
the boys performed at W.O.S.S.A.
The whole team played well
