Dear Editor: May I be so blunt as to refer to statements made last week in the House of Commons concerning "John Lee vs the Government of Canada." Do the Government Members have rocks in their heads? I have admired the Solicitor General of Can- ada (Honorable Herb Gray) in the past, but this last week stretches the imagination; never mind the lack of admiration. The subject matter is the Government of Canada settling a suit served by a convicted mur- derer on the Correctional Services. I am lead to be- lieve that upon the authorization of himself and fel- low Cabinet Members agreed to settle this suit for $12,000. Now if 1 have this correct, the inmate in question has sued due to the fact he was taken hos- tage by other inmates, was beaten and had to spend 2 weeks in hospital. What a load of fertilizer... This guy is a convicted murderer, so he must have done something rated as a no -no, even for other inmates. According to the media the Judge urged the par- ties to settle. Am 1 to understand that the Solicitor General now takes orders from his underlings? What happened to serve and protect'? 11 that Judge is still on the Government payroll after this stupidity, the Attorney General and the Solicitor General de- serve to be institutionalized for flagrantly violating the trust of the Canadian population and misappro- priation of Public Funds. r PRICE REDUCED ountry ' ome + . acres, completely renovated - move in condition Just 1 1/2 miles west on Stephen Township 2nd Conc. Large 2 storey brick home. 4 bedrooms, main floor family room, huge kitchen and bathroom. Bright sun room and rear deck. High efficiency oil heat, central air, drilled well, all new septic system. Ca!! 234-6721 or 235-0776 Who gave convicted felons, especially murderers, the right to sue? The main question is why do they have rights. They are put in "the big house" for vio- lating other individual's rights. I certainly hope that this settlement is coming out of Government Members' own paycheques, be- cause, we Canadians are tired of paying for stupidi- ty. On top of all this who cares that someone kicked his butt in the joint, if these elected MPs listened to the constituents who put them in "your Big House" want capital punishment reinstated. A couple feet'of rope does not cost $12,000. The Liberal Govern- ment is always dancing around with statements of "Canada the good" and the like. So far I have seen no action, except that upon the law abiding citizens of the land. Criminals even have a right to sue'? The Government should disbar the Judge and make sure he can not practice in any fashion in Can- ada. Tell the court to take a long walk off a short pier. If need be just say to the Supreme Court. "We invoke the notwithstanding Clause"; save the 12 grand, spend 12 bucks on rope and hang the individ- ual in question. We, Canadians, are tired of this stuff. I realize everyone was in high tempo for the Referendum. but that does not mean everything else can just fall apart. As stated I hope that Government members who support this action are paying the 12 grand, not the rest of the taxpayers of this land. G. Trudell 633 Upper James Street, Hamilton Ont.
