Exeter and Stephen teams shine in
Bill Batten Memorial tournament
Exeter Atom Broncos win "A" division championship,
Exeter Midget Generals take"B" title and Stephen
Township Peewees clinch "B" championship.

EXETER - The seventh annual
Bill Batten memorial tournament
took place over the weekend with
40 minor hockey 4eams playing Fri-
day night ttweugh Sunday.
The tatfrnament was the highlight
of the•year for Exeter Minor hock-
ey Association which hosted the
action with the cooperation of the
South Huron, Stephen Township,
-kicnsall and_the 3G -
rich Arenas.
Parents and hockey
fans were treated to a
fast -paced and en-
tertaining calibre of
hockey. Some of the
best minor iteeTcey
teams in Ontario par-
ticipated in the tour-
nament pitting their
skills against local
players from Exeter
and Stephen Township.
The Exeter Atom Broncos pulled
through for their hometown win-
ning the Atom "A" division cham-
pionship. The Bronco 'stomped all
over Goderich in their opening
game Friday winning 11-0 before
defeating a stubborn St. Marys
team 4-3 Saturday. They clinched
the "A" title 3-0 shutting out
Mooretown Sunday night.
The Exeter Ladies Auxiliary Pee-
wees also made it to the "A" final
but lost to a strong Durham team 3-
er Bantams were poised to take the
"A" championship but they ran into
a talented and strong skating
Mitchell team who denied them the
title winning 4-3.
The feature game of the weekend
took place between the Exeter
Midget Generals and a team from
Mount Clemens, Michigan.
Despite a solid effort by the Gen-
erals the American team showed
they came to play se-
rious hockey defeating
'Exeter 4-2 in a snap-
py and emotionally in-
tense game.
Undeterred by the
loss, the Generals
went on to win the "B"
championship shutting
out Mississauga 6-0
and beating Dresden
6-1 in the final.
In previous years,
only Novice, Atom and Peewee
teams were included.
Having the Midgets and Bantam
teams participate in the tournament
was an added attraction this year
which made the tournament much
more elaborate than before.
Hosting a tournament this size is
not without its own difficulties. It
was a scheduling challenge for or-
ganizers.
rganizers. Accommodations for 750
hockey players and coaches in the
area were scarce.
A three hour power failure Sat-
urday night threatened to throw the
tournament schedule into chaos
when the lights in the South Huron
Rec Centre went out. However, co-
ordinators Tim Ralph and Ron
Rader arranged to have the missed
games take place at the Zurich are-
na the next morning.
Don Richardson, President of Ex-
eter Minor Hockey said the tourna-
ment was a huge success for both
the players and parents.

The Stephen Township Peewee
Rebels were eliminated from the
"A" division by the Exeter Pee-
wees Friday in a close 4-3 game,
however, they rebounded with 9-1
romp over Clinton d a 5-1 vic-
tory overresp den Sunday to claim
the "B" championship.
After convincingly winning their
first two games, 8-2 over Brant-
ford and 6-1 over Clinton, the Exet-
"I think we saw some of the best
hockey in Ontario. A lot of these
visiting teams realized we have
some tough hockey teams up
here," said Richardson adding
many of the teams indicated they
would like to come back again.
Richardson said the tournament
may undergo some minor changes
next year to make it more cost ef-
ficient but and he would like to
have. more American teams par-
ticipate.
"When I run a tournament I want
to bring in teams our kids don't
normally play so they come up
against a variety of competition,"
he said.
Chad Gilfillan, captain for the
Exeter Midget Generals said play-
ing the different teams was a good
wake-up call for his team.
"I like the fact we played team
we wouldn't normally see, like the
team from the States. We learned
we should use our size more. The
experience is really going to help
us in the playoffs," he said.
Five years ago the tournament
was named after the late Bill Bat-
ten who was actively involved with
minor hockey in the area for many
years.
His sons Brett, Steve and Scott
were present Friday with their chil-
dren for a puck dropping cerewony,.
All three played minor hockey
Exeter and all three were coached
by their father at one point.
"We wouldn't have made the
team otherwise," joked Scott.
The Batten brothers agreed it was
an honor to attend the tournament
and drop the puck in their father's
memory.
"We had no idea it would be this
big. I think dad would have been
pleased."
Exeter Ringette hosts tournament
Four hundred girls will take to the ice for weekend long tourney
Chris Skalkos T -A staff
HENSALL - The Exeter and Area Ringette
Association will host its biggest tournament
of the year this weekend.
Over 400 girls, ranging in ages from seven
to 16 will participate in this year's event fea-
turing teams from Owen Sound, Oshawa, Dor-
chester, Woolwich, Walkerton, Goderich,
Mitchell, London, St. Clements, Forest, Sea -
forth and Kitchener -Waterloo.
Julie Ritchie, Association president, said
seven teams will represent Exeter among the
16 different teams invited and she is expecting
a favorable outcome.
"They are eager to get out there and play,"
she said.
According to Ritchie, playing teams outside
the Huron -Perth conference will benefit both
players and coaches as they will surely take
the experience with them into the playoffs.
"They don't know what they're up against
until they step on to the ice, so it should be a
real challenge for the coaches too."
Ritchie said the Ringette association is has
enjoyed generous sponsorship over the years
which enables them to pay the 40 to 50 hours
of ice time they need to host a tournament this
size.
"We have had some consistent sponsors who
have been very giving every year and the
community has been very supportive," she
said.
Despite the many different teams invited to
the tournament, Ritchie predicts the feature
game of the weekend will be between the two
Exeter Tween teams, dubbed Tween Red and
Tween White. The lasttime these two teams
met they battled their way to a 7-6 score with
the White team edging the Red by a point.
Their grudge match is scheduled for 10 a.m.
Sunday in Exeter.
The tournament will be held Nov. 18 and 19
from 8 a.m to 8 p.m. at the South Huron Rec-
reation Centre and the Hensall Arena with fi-
nals to be played Sunday night.
