November is Diabetes Month. One of the biggest
advances for diabetics during the past decade
has been self -testing of blood glucose. Self -
testing prevents diabetic complications and reduc-
es the number of diabetic hospital admissions.
The Lilly company. a manufacturer of insulin. is deve oping a new insu-
lin (called "insulin lyspro"). It's the same as human insulin but altered
slightly to make it more quickly absorbed. This means it can be given
right before meals rather than 30 minutes before.
A reminder in this season of colds and flu: Don't give your children ASA
to relieve fever and discomfort. .ASA increases the danger of develop-
ing Reye's syndrome, a serious illness affecting the brain and liver. Ac-
etaminophen is the better choice.
Walking is good for you. Even Charles Dickens knew that. He wrote
"Walk and be healthy. The best way to lengthen our days is to walk
steadily and with purpose.
