Grand Bend Task Force
suggest ways to improve
downtown streetscape
Committee would like prop-
erty owners to adopt "turn
of the century" theme.

GRAND BEND - A new committee established to
suggest ways of improving the appearance of
downtown Grand Bend is ready to offer their ideas
to the village.
The Main Street Task Force was creat-
ed last March to recommend Grand
Bend council of possible means to en-
hance the streetscape on Main Street
West and 81 Crescent.
Village Councillor and Committee
Chairperson, Bob Mann, said the com-
mittee would like to encourage property
owners on Main Street to consider ad-
hering to a uniform theme when ren-
ovating or re -developing any portion of land or
buildings facing the street.
Mann said current appearance of the main street
landscape needs to be revitalized to promote the
village as a year-round tourist destination.
"Downtown Grand Bend has some distinct prob-
lems. It's. not very vibrant and the merchants there
are not able to make a reasonable return on their in-
vestment," said Mann.
The committee agreed a "Turn of the Century/
Ontario Ileritage" style utilizing the historic nature
of the community would best suit the village. The
committee suggested an architect/designer prepare
"Doin

to det
concept drawigs, pictures and aesthetic guidelines
for owners to consider when doing work on their
buildings.
"As property owners decide to renovate we would
encourage them to adopt this design," said Mann,
adding the guidelines are strictly voluntary.
The task force has studied other themes such as
the "nautical look" which would compliment the
harbor and can be seen in the design of the wel-
come signs outside the village. However, most of
the committee's members supported the "Turn of the
Century" theme because of its dis-
tinctive design elements.
"It would be like the buildings you
see in those old pictures of Grand
Bend," explained Mann.
As an example, Mann pointed out
the community of Niagara A -On -
the -Lake adopted a similar program
that has worked for them.
"It has created character for the
community. It's really quite at-
tractive and it's bringing a lot of tourists in," he said.
A public meeting is scheduled for November 30,
7:30 p.m. in council chambers to present the task
force's ideas to the business owners on Main Street
for review and comment.
Mann said he hopes their recommendations are
supported by the merchants because it would ben-
efit the whole community.
"Doing nothing is not an option, it [the street-
scape] will only continue to deteriorate," Mann
said.

Fanshawe
College
students to
design
boardwalk
GRAND BEND - The Grand
Bend Parks and Recreation Com-
mittee will have the opportunity to
visualize a boardwalk on the beach
at no cost to the village.
Fanshawe College in London
agreed last Tuesday to have third
year landscape and design co-op
students plan and design a beach
boardwalk for Grand Bend.
Approximately 25 students will
be involved with the project which
follows the non-profit mandate of
the college. The village will pay for
the student's costs and an honorari-
um or award will be considered in
recognition for their efforts.
Sylvia Behr, an instructor of
landscape design, from Fanshawe
College will meet with the Parks
and Recreation Committee mem-
bers later this month to discuss the
details.
Creating a boardwalk on the
north beach is included in Grand
Bend's long-range plans.
