GODERICH - As part of Huron
County's local Drug Awareness
Week activities, Huron Addiction
Assessment and Referral Centre
(HAARC) will host a workshop en-
titled "Fetal Alcohol Syndrome" at
the Maitland Country Club in
Goderich on Friday, November 24,
1995 from 12 noon to 4:00 p.m.
The cost of this workshop is $15.00
which includes lunch. Registration
deadline is November 20. Contact
HAARC at 482-1767.
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS)/
Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAE) is a
leading cause of birth defects and
may be the most common cause of
mental disabilities. From current
studies, it appears that FAS/FAE
may be more prevalent than Downe
Syndrome (one per 600 live births)
and spina bifida (one per 700 live
births). The world wide incidence
of FAS has been estimated to be
one child in 500 births. While a
newborn can be withdrawn from -
addiction to alcohol or other drugs,
the developmental disabilities and
birth defects remain throughout
life. Some of the birth defects may
be corrected, but the impact on the
brain is permanent. The social ef-
fects of FAS/FAE follow a child
for a lifetime. It has been estimated
that each child born with FAS will
require at least $1 million for medi-
And the winner is...
Jean Mason and Kay Rathwell will split the first $500 draw
from Stephen Twp. Minor Hockey's cash calendar. Shown
above, fundraising officials Sue Rollings and Anita Davies
await the winner's ticket from arena employee Josh Bailey.
The daily draws run for the next four months.

EXETER - Student Council is one of the fundamental groups
within South Huron District High School. They coordinate and orga-
nize all outside activities such as dances, fundraising and intermural
sports. This year's council consists of nine students and two advis-
ors. The council is elected by the student body in May of the previ-
ous year.
This year's council is striving to bring a new creativity to the
school as well as provide fun opportunities for everyone. All of the
events held at the school so far this year have been very successful
thanks to the support of the students and staff. If anyone has any ide-
as for Student Council, representatives would be glad to listen. The
members of the Council are: Adam Jean, president; Andrew Hern,
first vice president; Anita Wein, second vice president; Melissa
Brock, social convenor; Lindsay McKay, treasurer; Kristy Ahrens,
secretary; Bryan McAllister, athletic chairperson; Heather Davis,
athletic liason; and Jason Shultz, trustee.
Everyone is really enjoying their positions on Council. This year's
group is working very well together. They thank the community for
their support of South Huron. Get involved, and participate. It
makes life fun.
