Three -time Ontario champions are dethroned in semi-
finals losing a close game by one penalty stroke
TORONTO - The South Huron
girls field hockey team defended
their Ontario championship in To-
ronto Saturday but had to settle for
the bronze medal after losing in
the semi-finals.
The three -time OFSAA cham-
pions were favored over the other
16 teams at the provincial tourna-
ment but lost 2-1 to
fifth -seeded Waterloo -
Oxford in the first
round of penalty
strokes.
Exeter won the
bronze medal after
they beat La Salle
from Kingston 1-0.
The OFSAA cham-
pionship went to Mis-
sissauga's Lorne Park,
which beat Waterloo -Oxford 1-0.
The semi-final Toss to the Water-
loo -Oxford Duckies was a heart-
breaking loss as the Panthers clear-
ly outplayed them but couldn't
score on the Duckies goalie.
"The girls played superb but they
couldn:t score. We -had more shots
on net but their goalie was hot,"
said coach Jim Workman.
With the score tied at 0-0 after
regulation time, both teams played
15 minutes of overtime and 10 min-
utes of sudden death overtime, but
with no side able to score they had
to resort to a shootout to decide a
winner.
Both sides exchanged four
strokes each with Kim Farquhar
scoring for the Panthers and with
the score tied at one Waterloo -
Oxford took their fifth stroke, a
high shot that bounced off Exeter

along the goal -line.
The referee called the ques-
tionable ball inside giving Water-
loo -Oxford the decisive winning
goal.
Workman said Glavin did an out-
standing job in net despite the
pressure put on her. Throughout
regulation play Gla-
vin had only faced
four shots on net and
was going into the
shoot-out cold.
"I was really ner-
vous because I didn't
have many shots on
me during the game
and all of a sudden it
came down to penalty
flicks," said Glavin.
The loss was a heartbreaker for
the Panthers who were emotionally
deflated after the semi-final game,
"It was a sad ride back to the ho-
tel room," added Glavin.
Workman said the game echoed
the 1992 OFSAA semi-final game
when the Panthers won on penalty
strokes and then went on to clinch
the championship. •
"I guess what comes around goes
around," said Workman. "When the
game is decided by penalty strokes
it puts a lot of pressure on the goal-
ies. At that stage it goes from being
a team game to an individual
game."
The loss was hard to swallow for
Workman who was confident they
had the better team and should have
won the tournament.

Exeter hosts 7th annual Bill
Batten minor hockey tournament
Forty minor hockey teams will play 50 games in three days
Chris Skalkos T -A staff
EXETER - Over 2,000 people
will visit Exeter this weekend to
participate in the Bill Batten Me-
morial Tournament.
The annual minor hockey tour-
nament was created seven
years ago to give local
hockey clubs a chance to
play teams from across
the province.
Don Richardson, pres-
ident of Exeter Minor
Hockey, said the tourna-
ment is the highlight of
the year as Exeter will
host some of the best mi-
nor hockey teams from On-
tario.
Forty teams will play 50 games
in just three days in the South Hu-
ron Recreation Centre with the
cooperation of Stephen Township
and Hensall arenas.
"You're going to sec some of the
best "CC" hockey going...right
here in Exeter," said Richardson.
In the past, only Novice, Atom
and Peewee teams were included.
This year, the tournament has ex-
panded to allow Bantam and Mid-
get teams to play.
"That was something I always
wanted," said Richardson about
including the Bantams and Mid-
gets. "I have always pushed
for a full tournament and
this year we have the ex-
ecutive support to pull it
off."
Tim Ralph, tournament co-
ordinator, said local teams
from Exeter and Stephen
Township will ben-
efit since they
will be play-
ing a variety
of different hockey teams
which should prove to be a tre-
mendous learning experience.
"The kids will have an op-
portunity to test themselves meet-
ing teams they normally wouldn't
come into contact with," said
Ralph.
One of those teams will be trav-
elling from Mount Clemens
Michigan. They will meet the Ex-
eter Midget team Friday night at
the Hensall arena in what Richard-
son has dubbed the feature game
of the weekend.
Last year, the Exeter Ladies
Auxi4iary Pewees, the Stephen
Township Peewee Rebels and the
Atom Sonics won Ontario cham-
pionships; all three teams par-
ticipated in the tournament.
In an effort to help .fund the
$5,000 expense of hosting a tour-
nament this size, a fundraising
craft and activities event is
scheduled to take place all
day Saturday at the Rec
Centre Hall.
Hockey parent
coordinator, Barb
Dietrich said 14 lo-
cal business will set
up tables with 35 craft
vendors and five sport
cards dealers. The
event will also include a bas-
ketball and hockey shootout con-
test for the youngsters. Dietrich
said the hall was booked within a
week and a large number of hock-
ey parents have volunteered their
time to help with the fundraiser.
Five years ago the tournament
was named after the late Bill
Batten who was actively in-
volved with minor hockey in the
area for many years.
His sons Steve, Scott and Brett
are tentatively scheduled to at-
tend the tournament to participate
in the puck dropping ceremony
Friday night to kick off the open-
ing game between Exeter and
Stephen at 6:30.
According to Ralph, the tour-
nament has become popular
among hockey minor hockey
circles. Applicants had to be
turned down this year.
With 750 hockey
players and coaches
bringing friends and
family members with
them, Richardson said
Exeter will be a busy
place this weekend and the in-
flux of -visitors will provide a
much needed boost to the local
economy.
"This tournament is a way to
give something back to the local
businesses who have supported
minor hockey," said Richardson.
ti
game but somebody always has to
lose," said Workman.
Despite the semi-final Toss, the
Panthers showed a lot of class re-
bounding from the game to clutch
victory from the jaws of defeat
beating La Salle 1-0 for the bronze
medal later the same day.
• Both games were attended by a
large contingent of South Huron
fans and relatives. Approximately
60 people hitched a ride on the
"spirit bus" driven by field hockey
fan Don Rader, or drove them-
selves through bad pre -winter
weather to cheer on the Panthers
providing a much needed moral
boost. The Panthers ended the sea-
son with a successful 41-2-1
record.
The field hockey team will lose
•four seasoned veterans next year.
Carisa Willis, Kristy Ahrens, Kim
Farquhar and Danielle Miners who
had 11 goals in six games, beating
her OFSAA record of 10 goals in
six games.
Workman said Farquhar and
Miners will be greatly missed since
the two of them have played togeth-
er for years and have proven to be
a lethal combination together on
the field. •
"It's going to be hard to fill some
of those shoes, but I'm confident
some of the other girls will step in
to do the job," said Workman.
"It was an intense two-month sea-
son. It started quick and ended
quick," said Workman in ret-
rospect. "I'm looking forward to
next season but I'm glad this one is
over."
