Zurich Fair Board needs support of the community Carmel Sweeney ZURICH - The Agricultural Soci- ety held their Fair Board meeting at the Township hall last Thursday. President Lloyd Otterbein chaired the meeting with secretary - treasurer Margaret Deichert who gave the minutes and reported on the District #8 annual dinner meet- ing in October. The main discussion during the vening was on ways to get more Zurich people interested and in- volved in the local fair. The Society needs the community's help and ideas on how to make the fair better and more interesting to the public. One of the suggestions was to send out questionnaires in order to get input from the public. If you have any ideas, let Lloyd or Margaret know. The annual meeting will be held in January. Bazaars A successful bazaar was held at St. Boniface Church hall on Satur- day with many winners from the penny sale and merchant's table. Raffle winners were: Angela Watson, Dashwood won a grocery hamper; Debbie Gavan, Sarnia, daughter of Josie Denomme won a money tree; and Maurene Regier of Mt. Carmel, daughter of Coby Van- deBoomen won a country cow. The Ladies Auxiliary will be hav- ing their bazaar, bake sale and tea at the Rest Home this Saturday, November 11 from 2 to 3:30 in the auditorium. There will be a penny sale table and cake and quilt draws. Church news Father Finn from London and Fa- ther Morris from St. Peter's said Masses at St. Boniface Church while Pastor Father Wronski was holidaying in Poland. The Knights of Columbus have begun work on the construction of a bell tower on St. Boniface Church. Bus trip A bus trip is being planned for Saturday, December 2 to Flint. Michigan, Crossroads Village, to see a Christmas Fantasyland, have dinner at Mill Street Dining Room and have a ride on steampowered Huckleberry Railroad. The bus leaves at 9:30 a.m. from Ellison Travel in Exeter and is escorted by Doug Erb, Zurich. For more infor- m3tion, call him as soon as possi- ble. Leaf pickup Leaves in the village will be picked up on November 8, starting at noon. Open house A "Sew Special" Christmas Open House was held from November 8 to November 12 from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the home of Rebecca Wild- er, RR 1 Zurich. All items for sale were made by her and three daugh- ters. Bayfield event Several Christmas activities have been planned in Bayfield this week- end, November 10 to 12. A tree lighting celebration will be held on Friday at 7 p.m. in Clan Gregor Square. Choir members from St. Joseph Parish, St. Peter's church, will be singing at this event in the park. Afterwards there will be refreshments served. PTA A P.T.A. meeting will be held at St. Boniface school this Thursday night, November 9 in the gym at 7:30 p.m.There will be a presenta- tion on peer meditation. All parents are urged to attend. Senior Diners Dinner was served to 40 Senior Diners November 1 at the Commu- nity Centre, which was decorated with yellow and bronze mums do- nated by Lee and Rose Regier. The 50/50 winners was Lee Regier. A poem "November" was read by Ina Neeb. Idella Gabel treated the diners to beautiful piano solos, and gave a reading "Hot Dog City, what's wrong with junk culture". Progressive euchre followed. Winners were: high, Elizabeth Granger; low, Dorthy Bapty; lone hands, Louise Hayter. Personals The family of Theresa Hartman held their family pre -Christmas din- ner and get-together on November 5, beginning with Mass at St. Boni- face Church at 11:15 a.m. After- wards all enjoyed a meal prepared by Richard Erb's Catering Service in the Parish Hall. Her children and their spouses came from Windsor, Lucan, Lon- don, Mt. Carmel, Waterloo and Zu- rich. Stephen Denomme of Abbots- ford, B.C. spent the past two weeks visiting with his parents Louis and Josie Denomme and relatives in the area. He helped his parents cele- brate their 49th anniversary on Oc- tober 26. Welcome to town Gerard and Mary Ducharme, who moved into their newly built home on Goshen Street over the weekend. A family pre -Christmas dinner and day of visiting was held at Cur- tis and Mary Gingerich's home on November 5 with 28 attending. Their children and spouses and grandchildren came from New Hamburg, Elmira, Guelph and the Zurich area. Happy birthday wishes to to Hei- di Klopp, who will be seven years old on November 11. Beth Sweeney of Toronto spent Saturday and Sunday with her par- ents Jerome and Carmel and family members. Nicole Beauchamp, who attends college in Toronto, spent the week- end with per parents and family, Don and Elaine. Special 90th birthday wishes are extended the Philippa Steckle on November 5, a resident of the Blue Water Rest Home. Brian Geoffrey, Detroit, Michi- gan, spent the weekend visiting with his parents Clarence and Beat- tie Geoffrey. Congratulations to Jerry and Julie Groot (nee Boyce) on the arrival of the first baby, a boy, Samuel Ken- neth John. He was born on October 31. He is the 29th grandchild for John and Bridget Groot Sr. of Park- side Crescent in Zurich. Eight sisters got together over the weekend at the home of Vonnie Overholt. They went for Saturday supper at Aunt Gussie's Restaurant in Grand Bend, then on Sunday had brunch at Erb's Country Kitchen. Sisters coming from London were Annette, Marilyn, Diane and Cecil- ia and those from Zurich were Von- nie, Marge, Rose -Ann and Barb. Queensway holds 1sf annual craft sale HENSALL - The highlight of the week was defi- nitely the November 1st craft and bake sale. Support from volunteers, community and staff members was wonderful, and very much appreciated. Thank you to all of you for making it such a success. Rev. Phil Bender of Zurich Mennonite Church led the worship service Tuesday with a very attentive audience. Gladys Van Egmond and her Old Tyme Music Group provided a great afternoon of music and fun. Anyone from the community is welcome to attend and share in the programs. The Hensall Legion and Legion Ladies Auxiliary members visited on Friday as part of their poppy campaign for Remembrance Day. By now some of you may have noticed the posters around Hensall, mentioning the Thursday evening dining program. The Thursday menus are posted for the month of November. Public Health nurse on hand at Hensall Community Drop-in HENSALL - Join the Hensall Community Drop-in, Thursday November 16 at the Hensall Unit- ed Church. Activities include foot care at 10 a.m. and a meal at noon. Sally Lawton will be the guest speaker. Sandra Feltz, the Public Health Nurse, will be on hand for consul- tation. Legion parade Sunday November 5, Legion members of Branch 468 Hensall, Ladies Auxiliary, Cadets, Scouts, Brownies and Guides held a short parade to Carmel Presbyterian Church, the host for the Rem- brance Day Service. The service was conducted by Rev. Dan Rou- shorne and Rev. Henry Annen. Afterwards a memorial service was held at the cenotaph, to pay tribute to our fallen comrades with the placing of several wreaths and crosses.
