Competitive
kickboxer gives
students a
practical look
at the sport

EXETER - Ron Tyndall has
taught many students the martial
arts over the years. Some of those
students have achieved their black -
belts and have gone on to es-
tablish schools of their own, while
others continue to study and com-
pete.
One of his students returned re-
cently to pay respects to Tyndall
and his karate school.
Brad Fowler, a competitive kick -
boxer, was in Exeter Tuesday night
putting on a kickboxing dem-
onstration at South Huron District
High School.
Fowler, a native of Goderich, ob-
tained his blackbelt in karate under
Tyndall in 1991 before studying
kickboxing. Currently, he is teach-
ing karate in Lucknow with his
partner Leo Loucks, lightweight
kickboxing champion from 1986 to
1988.
In Exeter, there are a number of
schools offering a variety of mar-
tial art disciplines, however, people
interested in studying kickboxing
must travel out of town.
Fowler's demonstration allowed
the students in Tyndall's karate
class and a handful of spectators,
the opportunity to see what this
unique form of martial art is all

about.
As the name suggests, kick-
boxing is a practical form of self-
defense which combines karate
with the punching techniques of a
boxer..
"It's just like boxing only you get
to use your feet," said Fowler.
Kickboxing is different from
most other fighting disciplines be-
cause of it's aggressive nature.
"In karate your first move is al-
ways a block, rather than an attack
like in kickboxing. It's more of an
aggressive sport," said Fowler.
