More than 1,500,000 served and more than 100,000 died. It is for the future of Canada and for their homes, families and friends that those 100,000 Canadians sacrificed their lives. In remembrance of those who fought for Canada in all wars, the Royal Canadian Legion, Exeter R.E. Pooley Branch 167 has organized many events including the annual Poppy Campaign. On Thurs. Nov 2, the campaign, by members of the branch and assisted by the Huron -Middlesex Army Cadet Corps, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, Legion members, veterans, ladies -auxiliary and all service clubs and organizations or interested persons are invited to the Remembrance Service. A parade will begin at the Legion at 10 a.m. and the march will proceed to the Cenotaph for laying of wreaths and the Last Post. The church service will be held at the Trivitt Memorial Church followed by fellowship at the branch. Legion members will hold services at all local schools on Fri. Nov. 10, starting at South Huron District High School at 9 a.m. Remembrance Day, Sat. Nov. 11 will be marked with a banquet at the branch. Guest speaker will be Major Rod McAlphone, former commander of CFD Meaford. The Hensall Legion Branch also begins its Poppy Campaign on Nov. 2. Door to door canvassers will visit Hensall homes between 6 and 9 p.m. and Nov. 5 a remembrance service will be held at the Hensall Presbyterian Church. The parade to church will begin at 9:30 a.m. followed by laying of wreaths at the Cenotaph and the Last Post. On Remembrance Day, Sat. Nov 11, a banquet will be held at the Hensall Community Centre at 6 p.m. John Webster of R.R.1 Hay Township, a proud member of the Royal Canadian Merchant Marines, has been a part of the Remembrance Day Legion Poppy Campaign for many years. As a soldier in the army Kwo years and serving with the marines for eight years, Webster has been decorated with many artime medals. He enlisted at age 21 in 1939 for W.W. II and recently honored the 50th anniversary of the Invasion of Normandy along with veterans around the world. VE/VJ Days commemorate the end of the World Ward in Europe and Japan. The ending of World War II marks its 50th Anniversary this year and all WWII veterans and branch members will receive complimentary tickets from the Exeter and Area Historical Society for the branch banquet on Nov. 11.
