Carmel Sweeney ZURICH - The Ontario Associa- tion of Agricultural Societies held their District #8 annual meeting last October 24 in Brussels with repre- sentatives from fair boards in Hu- ron -Perth areas. Fourteen members from the Zu- rich Fair Board attended and all en- joyed a roast beef dinner before the meeting. President Lloyd Otterbein and his wife Helen attended, and District 8 Home craft representative Margaret Deichert and her husband Claire. District director Lyle Haney from Seaforth introduced and welcomed the ten ambassadors present. Among them were Renee Sweeney of Zurich. All the ambassadors will be go- ing to the convention in Toronto from February 20 to 22. Paul Steckle and his wife Cathy were introduced. Broadcaster Ke- vin Stewart was guest speaker for the evening. Phyllis Deichert had a quilt on display. Winners of the home-made bread contest were: first, Brussels Socie- ty; second, Zurich Society (made by Sheila Miller of Dashwood); third, Hensall Society (made by Ha- zel Corbett). Next year's annual meeting will be held in Milverton. Right -to -Life The Stratford & District annual Right to Life dinner and meeting will be held this Thursday Novem- ber 2 at the K. of C. hall in Strat- ford. Social hour will begin at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7:00 p.m. Guest speaker will be Father Al- phonse De Valk of Toronto. Phone Sylvia Mittleholtz to see if there is still room to go. St. Boniface Parish will be col- lecting Right -to -Life membership dues at church during the next two weekends. Auxiliary The Ladies Auxiliary meeting will be held at Blue Water Rest Home on Tuesday, November 7 be- ginning with a program in the audi- torium at 7:00 p.m. Plans will be finalized for the up- coming bazaar, tea and bake sale on November 11 at the Home from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Harvest dance Tickets are now on sale for the K. of C. Harvest Dance at the Zu- rich Community Centre on Novem- ber 18 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Ad- vance tickets $6.00 from Mozart Gelinas Sr., John Jacobs, Ray Hart- man or Ralph Smith or members of Zurich or Seaforth councils. They can also be purchased at the door for $7.00 which include. lunch and dancing to music by Mo- zart's Melody Makers. Remembrance Day The Zurich Senior Diners are in- viting the public to attend their Re- membrance Day service to be held at the Community Centre Novem- ber 8 at 12:45 p.m. Auxiliary Canvassers collected a total of $1,447.25 for the South Huron Hospital Auxiliary from the people of Zurich. CWL The C.W.L. Deanery meeting will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church Parish hall in Grand Bend on November 8. Mass will start at 9:00 a.m. followed by regis- tration at 9:30 a.m. Phone Mary Regier at 236-4035 as soon as possible if you plan to attend. It will cost $5.00 for lunch. Girl's Club The Girl's Club had fun last Fri- day night as they went swimming at Kicks pool in Exeter and then re- turned back to the Mennonite Church hall where they watched a video, played games, and enjoyed pizza. They plan to go bowling at their next meeting November 9 at the Town & Country Lanes at 7:00 p.m. Halloween parties A Halloween party was held at the Dominion Hotel on Saturday night. A great time was had by the youth group at St. Peter's Lutheran Church on Sunday night at a cos- tume party. The school children and some teachers had fun dressing up for class. On Friday the senior grades of St. Boniface had a Halloween dance in the gym during the after- noon. CWL The C.W.L. women from St. Pe- ter's Parish, St. Joseph held a very successful penny sale recently. Zurich Golden Agers A potluck supper preceded the October meeting of the Zurich Golden Agers. The meeting opened with 'O Canada' and The Lord's Prayer. The minutes and the treas- urer's report were accepted as read. Plans were finalized for the euchre party October 23. Phyllis Deichert read some smiles, led the group in a sing song with her accordion and conducted several games of card bingo, followed by a few games of euchre and solo. Four members at - Senior tappers The Class/c Tappers entertain the residents of the Exeter Villa Friday aftemoon. The tap dancing group members range from 63 to 76 in age and make 275 appearances a year. Volunteers host party ZURICH "The Country Old Timers" hosted the October birth- day party at Blue Water Rest Home on Monday evening. The group are volunteers who were created to fill a void created when one group was unable to attend. Our best wishes to Helen Otterbein on guitar, Cal- vin Gingerich on guitar, Irvin Mar- tin on mouth organ, Dennis Smith on Guitar and hand saw and Au- drey Haberer as pianist who did a first rate job at entertaining the res- idents. Helen read "When the Har- vest Moon Is Shining Down the River." Annie Martin, Mary Mar- tin, George Stephenson, Barbara Plumb and Vivian Fremlin re- ceived birthday presents compli- ments of the Auxiliary and dough- nuts and bismark were served by Doreetl Oesch, Grace Martin, Mau - ria Mathonia, Donna Klopp, Helen Otterbein and Mary (Calvin) Gingerich. Pearl Miller thanked the group and invited them to come back again. The Monday afternoon movie was "Geronimo" with Gene Hack- man. Tuesday evening the Lakeview Conservative Mennonite Church under the direction of Rev. Merlin Bender visited the home to enter- tain the residents with the singing of hymns "I Love to Tell the Story, There is a Name I Love to Hear, This is My Story," just to name a few. Chocolate chips and peanut butter cookies and squares were served by ladies of the church with the assistance of Linda Denomme, NA. Vera Thiel, a resident at the home thanked the group for their visit. Eighteen clergy members from lo- cal churches were guests of the home for a luncheon on Thursday for "Spiritual and Religious Care Awareness Week". Cathy Shantz, Adjutant invited the clergy of the area who had provided Chapel Ser- vice to the Home the previous year. Josef Risi, Administrator and Fred Haberer, Chairman of the Board of Directors welcomed their guests. Volunteer Auxiliary members Mar- tha Risi and Gladys Gingerich served the dinner in the auditorium. Kathy Steckle, Cook Supervisor prepared a lovely roast beef dinner for her special guests. Guests were Rev. Bob Peebles, Pastor Ross Thompson, Rev. Gani Lazaro, Rev. Philip and Julia Bender, Rev. Mer- lin Bender, Pastor and Mrs. Gerald Wilson, Rev. Jack Patterson, Rev. Aubrey Bell, Rev. and Mrs. Henry Annen, Rev. Dan Roushorne, Rev. Cyril Gingerich, Father Elwyn Mor- ris, Rev. Richard Anions and Rev. and Mrs. Robert Graham. Rev. Robert Graham, a retired Nazarene minister conducted Thursday afternoon chapel service and Mrs. Graham was organist. Fr. Elwyn Morris, St. Peter's RC Church, St. Joseph celebrated Mass. The residents look forward to a bus trip on October 30, a Hal- lowe'en Party and Bible Study on October 31 and Gladys and Her Merry Makers on November 1. The Auxiliary and Home will hold their Annual Christmas Tea and Bake Sale Bazaar on Saturday, Novem- ber 11 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Our best wishes to Arthur Sume- racki who has moved to Michigan to be near his family. Arthur was resident at the home for a few weeks in October and previously lived at St. Joseph. Welcome to Clarence Gascho of Zurich who is a new resident to BWRH. Our condolences to the family and friends of the late Mary Martin who passed away at BWRH on Sunday, October 29. Mary was in her 84th year, a resident of the home the past 3-1/2 years and mother to Ann McBride, hobby room convener and mother-in-law to Ervin Steinmann, maintenance supervisor. tended the Tri -County Senior Games meeting in Parkhill October 27. Four members attended the Senior Games Euchrerama in Dela- ware October 28 and four attended a euchrerama in Parkhill October 26. At the recent euchre, there were 11 tables. High score was won by Joe Miller, second by Stewart Blackwell and lone hands by Lottie Grenier. Draws were won by Betty Grenier, Pearl Taylor, Louise Hayter, Irene Blackwell and Kathe- rine Becker. Senior Diners Fifty Zurich Senior Diners met at the Community Centre recently. The dining room tables were cen- tred with maroon mums donated by Gerry Kane. Leila Becker was the 50/50 winners. A poem 'A Land of Painted Trees' was read by Pearl Heimrich. Robert and Ellen Gra- ham, Centralia, entertained the din- ers with Robert singing beautiful familiar hymns, accompanied by Ellen on the piano. She also treated the diners to familiar violin num- bers. Robert gave a humorous read- ing 'A Farmer's Dayvorce'. Euchre and solo games followed. The Diners met again October 25 with an attendance of 54. The Com- munity Centre was decorated in a Halloween theme, with various decorations of spooks, witches, pumpkins, black and orange streamers. The diners were greeted by Seniors dressed in various Hal- loween costumes. Susan Hemming - way (as Annie), Elizabeth Granger (a pioneer woman), Charles Northey (a painter), Tammy An- taya (an ant), Faye Skinner (a fancy woman), and Gertie Fleischauer (a witch). Harvey Hohner was the 50/ 50 winner. Happy birthday was sung for Ann Flaxbard. Susan Hemmingway thanked the diners for their contribution towards a food voucher of her recent mar- riage Thanksgiving weekend. Phy- lis Deichert spoke of French words of Cartier's monument, translated. She also sang a song 'Tis Hallo- ween' unaccompanied. Card games followed. Personals Recent visitors with Emma Schilbe were relatives George and Lillian Sitter and Ena Zavitz from Thedford, along with Bob and Marg Reid from Varna. Weekend guests with Seleda Steckle at the Rest Home Apart- ments were daughters Esther Steck- le from Ohio and Mary from Hali- fax, and granddaughter Heidi Mumaw of Ohio. All attended the wedding of Dianne and Doug Spar - ling (nee Steckle) on October 21. The couple now reside in Tavis- tock. Ivan Willert has returned home to Edmonton after spending a week recently visiting with friends and relatives in the Baden, London and Zurich area. Scott Bedard has taken up resi- dence in the former home of Mari- on Becker on Goshen St. Farewell to Marion who moved to Seaforth over the weekend and will be missed by her many friends in Zurich. Queensway news HENSALL - Winnie Hutton, Queensway's Pastoral Care Vol- unteer led the Worship service Tuesday afternoon with Phyliss Desjardine as volunteer pianist. Wednesday evening Queens- way retirement home "dining out" club travelled to Erbs Coun- try Kitchen and enjoyed a deli- cious meal. This activity will take place the last Wednesday of each month as we experience different restaurants. Chinese food is on the agenda for No- vember. Elgin Fisher, Bruce Ryan and Mr. McGlinchey of the Nash- ville Rejects provided a wonder- ful afternoon of music at the Oc- tober birthday party, Thursday afternoon. Birthday greetings to Pearl Eyre, Homer Taylor, Eliza- beth Briggs, and Murray Jessom. Friday resident council met and discussed several issues. We would like to remind everyone of the Craft and Bake Sale this week, Wednesday November 1, at 2 p.nt. to 4 p.m. We have tea tables, door prizes, and raffles. The Kippen Ramblers led by Bill Clark of Hensall entertained a very responsive crowd on Sat- urday afternoon. We thoroughly enjoy having 'musical programs on a weekend when so many families can come and be a part of the fun. Volunteers help residents that like to dance at these events.
