Facts of engine life for cars burning oil
An early warning
sign of engine wear
is excessive oil
consumption;
usually
accompanied by
blue -black exhaust smoke. A
common reason for this condition
is worn valve guide seals,
according to Car Care Canada of
the Automotive Industries
Association of Canada. The valves
in a typical engine may open and
close as often as 100,000 times per
hour at highway speeds. The stem
of the valve, sliding up and down it
its guide, is fitted with a special
seal designed to permit only a
limited amount of oil to pass.
(Some oil is necessary for
lubrication.)
When these seals wear or harden,
oil burning begins. Many to the
to burn oil prematurely are due to
vehicle neglect. Pir:ton rings, for
example, can wear out prematurely
because of the owner's failure to
change the oil and filter regularly.
Worn rings lead to excessive oil
consumption.
There's only one satisfactory cure
for worn piston rings: major engine
work, which normally is
accompanied by replacement of
bearings, timing belt or chain, valve
guides and other worn internal
components. At that time valves
are ground or replaced.
This procedure, combined with a
complete tune-up, usually will
return the engine to nearly new
performance.
With proper maintenance an
engine should go well beyond the
160,000 km mark without needing
an overhaul. Check engine oil
regularly, recommends Car Care
Canada. If oil is over -full or smells
like gasoline, it may be diluted with
gasoline, thereby having lost some
of its lubricating qualities.
If you have to pump the
accelerator to keep the engine from
stalling, you may be pumping raw
gasoline into the crank case. This
situation can be avoided by keeping
the engine in tune.
Misfiring spark plugs can
aggravate a situation such as this
because they permit raw, unburned
gasoline to wash into the crank
case. Not only does this create
hard starting, it also accelerates
wear due to diluted engine oil.
Another factor in oil burning is a
malfunctioning positive crank case
ventilation (PCV) valve, which is
.Cooling system service:
doing it right the first time
Overheating, a
leading cause of
mechanical
breakdown, is
notorious for
interrupting vacation
travel. Avoid the expense and
inconvenience of a breakdown on
the road far from home. By
spending a few extra dollars for
complete cooling service on your
car, truck or van before your
summer holiday, you could save
big dollars in the long run. Car
Care Canada of the Automotive
Industries Association of Canada
would like to show you a couple of
ways to save money by investing in
proper service of your vehicle's
cooling system.
1.Save labour charges (or your
own time, if you dd your own
work) by taking care of all
necessary replacements at one
time.
When one hose or drive belt
needs replacing, you are likely to
find more in marginal condition.
Rubber components under the hood
live in a hostile environment,
surviving temperatures ranging
from sub -zero to more than 118
degrees celsius, circulating up to
28,000 litres of coolant per hour at
up to 7.2 kg of pressure. They
warrant periodic attention.
Have the system pressure tested
and inspect all hoses, clamps, and
connections. Hoses may become
spongy and soft, or, in some cases,
brittle. Also, belts should be
inspected for signs of cracked,
frayed or glazed conditions.
Note: The radiator cap serves as
the safety valve in the cooling
system. The pressure test, available
at most service dealers, not only
will disclose existing or potential
leaks in the system, it also can
detect a faulty pressure cap.
2. Save gas with an efficient
vehicle.
An engine, like your body, has an
optimum operating temperature.
Most engines run in the 97 - 113

,a
degree celsius range, controlled by
the cooling system thermostat. But
fuel economy will drop as much as
10 % - 20 % when engine
operating temperature falls below
53 degrees celsius.
The small investment to replace a
faulty thermostat soon can pay for
itself, not only in gas savings, but
also in terms of reduced engine
wear.
3. Avoid premature engine
overhaul through timely
maintenance.
Cost of repairing an engine
damaged by overheating, or by
operating too cold, can run into
thousands of dollars, an expense
that can be avoided with thorough
and proper servicing of the cooling
system.
In addition to the above
mentioned inspection, complete
cooling system service should
include flushing of the system and
installation of fresh anti -freeze
coolant (in a 50-50 mixture with
water).

If the PCV system is not in
proper working order, it can e
cause of oil burning.
Remember: excessive oil burning
is a condition that gradually
worsens and can affect other
aspects of the engine. Like so
many other car troubles, says Car
Care Canada, early detection and
correction are essential.
