Why so high?
"...then there's Exeter who
seems to be a leader of high
priced gasoline."
Dear Editor:
As a resident of Exeter, I am deeply disturbed
about the high cost of gasoline in Exeter, when we
This week's prices in
Lucan and London.
ThL THF, 7V MA
can purchase it as low as 48.9 in
London and 49.9 in Lucan. In
Exeter we have to pay 55.3. We
have checked prices in Fullar-
ton, Corbett, Denfield to name a
few who are lower, then there's
Exeter who seems to be a leader
of high priced gasoline. For a
16 gal. tank this represents an
extra cost of between five and
six dollars. Dated pictures have
been taken showing the prices
on the pumps in London and Lucan in comparison to
Exeter.
It would be appreciated if someone could explain
to all your customers here in Exeter the reason for
this exorbitant price difference.

More pumpkins stolen
It's pretty sad when someone
steals a little girl's pumpkins...
Dear Editor:
I had heard from a neighbor that pumpkins had
been stolen from around the area. Ours were still
sitting on our front step, so I didn't worry about it.
Saturday, 1 looked outside and noticed only one
pumpkin, five were gone. Why they left one pump-

BIDDULPH TOWNSHIP -
Councillor Jim Shipley asked Bid-
dulph Township Council at last
Monday's regular meeting about the
necessity of hiring a human re-
sources officer in this time of re-
straint.
Reeve Earl French explained this
officer would be responsible for
health and safety in addition to the
other regular duties.
It was also reported council is in-
vited to the county office on Oct.
26 to hear the report of the focus
group on the amalgamation pro-
posals.
A delegation from the Ontario
Clean Water Association attended
the council meeting to discuss the
Granton water system. Bruce Bot -
land from OCWA outlined the new
proposal for funding operations
similar to Granton. They are will-
ing to restructure the capital portion
of the operation to a separate ac-
count. Presently the Township
owes approximately $28,000 an
this is financed at 9.75 per cent for
another 22 years.
OCWA proposes to offer a fixed
price for a three to five year term
for general operations with some
parameters on major repairs. This
price does not include the grant in
lieu for taxes.
Borland will have the agreement
in the hands of the council for their
consideration within two weeks.
Hc will require a decision from
council by Nov. 15 to be able to
have the necessary work completed
in time to have this new deal ef-
fective January 1. If the township
opts to continue with the present
agreement, there will be an addition
5.1 per cent levy for the coming
year.
Council agreed to meet on Nov.
7 to discuss the OCWA proposal.
In further council business, Gary
Orchard reported on the pump
breakdown. The approximate cost
incurred for this break was $9,000.
The standby well carried the major-
ity of the village after it was
pumped for some time to freshen
the water.
The Township of Biddulph Coun-
cil accepted with regret the resigna-
tion from Gary Barker as a Granton
Trustee.

kin, I will never understand. I suppose they were be-
ing kind leaving us one.
We grew the pumpkins for our three year old
daughter. Now we have to explain that someone
took them. I think its pretty sad when someone
steals a little girl's pumpkins.
I realize no one is getting hurt and our property
isn't damaged but stealing is against the law. 1 hope
that whoever is doing this realizes it is wrong.

Tree seedlings prices to double in 1997
EXETER - The price of tree
seedlings will nearly double in
1997, so you'd better order your
trees now for planting in 1996 ac-
cording to Steve Harburn, the
ABCA's Forestry Technician. The
Ministry of Natural Resources will
be trying to recover the full cots of
growing seedlings and this will in-
crease the price from the current
10 cents per seedling to 19 cents.
"As well, the Ministry tree nur-
series in Kemptville and Orono
will be closed, resulting in fewer
seedlings being available for land-
owners," said Harburn.
The ABCA has tree delivery and
planting services for landowners.
"There arc still many seedlings
and larger stock trees available for
the spring. These trees are sold on
a first-come, first served basis with
a January 15 ordering deadline.
Anyone ordering after January 15
must pay up -front and we cannot
guarantee their order can he
filled," Harburn said.
'In the Planting Assistance Pro-
gram, 50 per cent grant are still
available for landowners who want
us to plant the trees for them," ex-
plained Ual'burn. If landowners
would like to plant the trees them-
selves, the ABCA has two ma-
chine planters for rent.
Nannyherry and larch are two
new seedling species for 1996.
Nannybery grows on wet sites, is a
good wildlife shrub with high
numbers of berries, and grows
about 15 feet tall. Larch is also
available. It's fast-growing, easy to
transplant and the timber is used
universally.
For over 40 years, the ABCA and
MNR have worked with landown-
ers to reforest our communities. Al-
though millions of trees have been
planted thus far, many river valleys
and erosion -prone soils still need
to be protected with tree cover.
Nineteen -ninety-six might be the
hest year for everyone to add some
trees to their land.
