Not all Halloween candy harmful for
trick or treaters if precautions taken
TORCNTO - While little ghosts
and witches eagerly look forward
to the annual candy fest at Hallo-
ween, many parents shudder, wor-
ried about hyperactivity and enor-
mous dental bills - - and they often
Name sugar as the culprit.
Well, don't let the
sugary treats trick you.
Experts now say that
sugar has taken some
undeserved lumps
over the years and that \ _
it doesn't make chil-
dren hyper after all.
"Numerous studies
such as the one conducted in 1993
by David Di Battista and his col-
leagues at Brock University and by
Mark Wolraich et al. (published in
the new England Journal of Medi-
cine in 1994) have concluded it is
the excitement of events such as
Halloween, Easter or birthday par-
ties that trigger high-spirited be-
havior in children, not the sweet
treats," says Claire Cronier, a dieti-
tiaft and director, Nutrition Com-
munications, with the Canadian
Sugar Institute. "Even Canada's
Food Guide to Healthy Eating has
revised its wording on sugar, not-
ing that there is no need to reduce
the current average amount of sug-
ar consumption among Canadians.
"The fact remains that there is
no conclusive, scientific evidence
to confirm a link between hyperac-
tive behavior and sugar. In fact,
some studies suggest sugar has a
calming effect," added Cronier.
Cronier says Halloween is the
perfect time for parents to take
stock of their children's health.
"As a parent and former teacher,
I've had experience watching kids
go crazy for Halloween candy, and
as a dietitian, I believe first and
foremost that children should eat a
balanced, nutritious diet. But, I
also think Halloween goodies and
sugars can be part of that healthy
diet as long as they are eaten in
moderation."
Another myth is that sweets are
the biggest cause of cavities. Den-
tists now say that any carbohy-
drate -rich food that stays on teeth
has the ability to damage them.
Brushing, flossing and regular
checkups can prevent most tooth
decay before it begins.
Here are some tips
from the Canadian
Sugar Institute to
help make your Hal-
loween safe, healthy
and happy.
• The Canadian
Sugar Institute rec-
ommends that kids
- eat a good meal be-
fore they go trick or treating. Re-
mind them to leave handouts in
their bag while trekking from door
to door.
• Back at home, inspect the loot.
Unfortunately, there have been in-
cidents of tampering over the
years. You should discard any
items with torn wrappings, and any
Panther
basketball
action
PARKHILL - The senior girls
basketball team took one of three
games during the Parkhill Opti-
mists Tournament on the weekend.
The Panthers lost to Medway 59-
22 on Friday before rebounding
with a 42-35 win against Port Elgin
Saturday. In the consolation final,
South Huron suffered a crushing
defeat against St. Mike 44-16.
The Panthers played well consid-
ering they only had six players
dressed for the tournament with
Helen Theophilopoulas racking up
23 points in two games and Stepha-
nie Pearson scored 22 in three
games.
The junior girls haskethall team is
still looking for their first league
win. They were defeated by F.E.
Madill by only three baskets during
their 43-37 loss on Wednesday.
They also lost to Goderich 40-23
October 4 and to Scaforth 52-34.
Despite thc losses, coach Brian
O'Connel said a victory is just
around the corner as the juniors
continue to work together as a
team. Most of the team's offensive
talent spread out among 11 players
and it will just be a matter of time
before they start winning.
The Midget girls basketball team.
led by Stac y Somerville has faired
well this season. So far they have
recorded two victories with a close
34-32 win over Goderich on Octo-
her 4 and a convincing 42-30 win
over Seaforth on October 2.
The Huron Perth girls basketball
teams will next sec action October
18 when thcy visit Central Huron.
Their next home game will take
place October 30 when they take on
thc visiting Seaforth teams.

unwrapped candies or confections.
Fruit should also be washed and
cut into small pieces before eating.
• Cull any candy that present a
choking hazard for younger chil-
dren such as sour balls or gum
balls as well as peanuts and raisins.
• Once you've inspected the can-
dy, store it in a central place where
you can monitor it. Kids have a
habit of keeping candy by the bed
and sneaking handfuls -- often for-
getting to brush their teeth after-
wards.
• Stickier, hard candies that lin-
ger in the mouth such as candy
kisses, toffee or lollipops are hard-
est on the teeth, according to the
Canadian Sugar Institute. Make
sure children brush and floss as
soon as possible after eating can-
dies.
• Give children candy after meal-
time. It is meant to be an addiction
to, not a substitute for other foods.
