BANNOCKBURN - Literally hundreds of parents, grandparents, chil-
dren and four -legged family members turned out to enjoy the fall colors at
the annual Fall Hike at Bannockburn Wildlife Management Area in Stan-
ley Township.
This year's turnout surpassed last year's numbers with a tally of over
400.
"We had over 300 people through last year," said Pat Donnelly of the
Ausable-Bayfield Conservation Authority.
Bannockburn is owned and operated by the ABCA which boated the
event. After a hike through wet meadow, deciduous forest and marsh, par-
ticipants enjoyed a taste of hot or cold apple cider.
ABCA staff were on hand at various spots along the hike to point out
various tree species in the forest and talked about wildflowers, bird migra-
tion, wildlife shrubs and the coniferous plantations.
The ABCA purchased the 60 -acre wildlife area 22 years ago and has in-
stalled boardwalks, steps and bridges along the route to help prevent soil
erosion and make hiking easier. It has been hosting this hike since the
purchase of the property in 1973.
While some improvements of the land have occurred naturally as aban-
doned farm field returned to nature, the ABCA staff has worked at making
the property hospitable to a wide variety of wildlife.
If you missed the organized hike, you can still enjoy the leaves turning
color. Bannockburn is located two kilometres north of Huron County
Road 3, between Varna and Brucefield in Stanley Township.
Call the ABCA at 519-235-2610 for further information.
