Grand Bend Legion enjoys
increase in membership
Legion week invites the public to learn about legion branches
Chris Skalkos T -A staff
GRAND BEND - The Royal Ca-
nadian Legion in Grand Bend is no
different than the 1.720 legion
branches across Canada. Their
mandate, to look after war vet-
erans who served their country dur-
ing conflict as well as their de-
pendents, and to ensure they carry
on with a respectable life, hasn't
changed over the years.
What has changed is their mem-
bership and their growing in-
voltemcnt with the surrounding
community.
Members of the public honored
Legion Week during September 17-
23 to celebrate the vital link they
provide between war veterans and
the general community.
The work of each local legion is
becoming more public as time
dims the memory of two world
wars. At' the Grand Bend Legion
(Branch 498) members contribute
approximately $50,000 annually to
community projects including char-
ities like the United Way and spe-
cial interest groups like Jesse's

Fall Hike
October 1
EXETER - October is the
month when nature really shows
its stuff as it starts to adapt for
the winter. Forests come alive
as leaves turn bright colors and
squirrels scurry about, hoarding
food for winter. Sec it all hap-
pen by starting your month of
October by attending the Ban-
nockburn Fall Hike on Sunday,
October 1 at thc Bannockburn
Wildlife Area.
From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Ausa-
hlc-Bayfield Conservation Au-
thority (ABCA) staff will be at
points of interest along thc na-
ture trails to identify the chang-
es that are happening in the
many ecosystems. Staff will
also highlight the. changes that
have taken place over the 22
years since the Authority pur-
chased the property; changes
that you can foster on your own
property.
When you finish your hike
you'll he treated to hot or cold
apple cider. Please bring your
own mug so that we can make
this a littcrless hike.
"Last year, over 300 people
attended the hike. The rolling
and tree -covered terrain allows
a lot of people to he along the
nature trails without it being
congested," said Kate Monk of
the ABCA.
Bannockburn Wildlife Area is
a 60 -acre parcel of land in Stan-
ley Township. Since the Author-
ity Nought thc land in 1973, they
have been improving the land
for a wide variety of wildlife.
Some improvements happened
on their own as the abandoned
farm fields returned to nature.
The property has become a
place of natural and recreational
interest for arca residents.
Boardwalks. stairs and bridges
make the hiking a little easier
aril protect the delicate environ-
ment.
Bather your family and
friends together on October I
and head to Bannockburn Wild-
life Arca. It's located two kilo-
metres north of Huron County
Road #3, between Varna and
Bruccfield in Stanley Township.

At the Grand Bend branch, mem-
bers have promoted an annual va-
riety show produced by citizens at
the Grand Cove Estates retirement
community, now in its 17th year
with over 120 people attending.
Community fire departments also
ger a boost. So far this year, the
Legion has contributed $27,000 to
the Grand Bend and Dashwood
fire departments. The money has
helped them to upgrade equipment.
There are 145 active veterans in-
volved with the Grand Bend Le-
gion. The branch was established in
1949 and currently has a total of
525 members.
Despite the services the legion
provides for the community,
Branch President Ron Crown said
their biggest chatiange is com-
municating the Legion's activities
to the community.
"Many people believe all le-
gionnaires do is drink beer and play
bingo...but we're involved with a
lot more than that," said Crown.
"It's tough dispelling that myth but
it's slowly getting better."
Crown said membership has in-
creased by 250 over the past five
years and he feels this is a direct re-
sult of the legion becoming more
involved with the community.
"People see the different things
we do and they want to get in-
volved,' he said.
New members are vital to the le-
gion to keep it alive since the num-
ber of veterans are slowly dwin-
dling.
"Membership is important, that's
what we live by. Without members
we can't function," said Crown.
adding the legion is entirely run by
volunteers.
Crown said Legion Week is de-
signed to inform the public about
the objectives and accomplish-
ments of branch 498 and he hopes
the message is getting through. The
future existence of the royal Ca-
nadian Legion may depend on it.

Courts to
decide beach
ownership
TORONTO - A Toronto court
will soon decide who owns a popu-
lar stretch of beach in Grand
Bend.
Malcolm (Archie ) Gibbs, a
Parkhill contractor is defending his
ownership of a 4.4 acre beach
strip that was awarded to him six
years ago.
A general division Ontario court
handed over the property, a stretch
of beach from the bottom of Main
Street to the government pier, to
Gibbs in 1989. He was also
awarded $1.2 million in lost reve-
nue from the site.
Since the decision the village has
had to lease parts of the beach for
public use. The village and the
province are appealing the 1989
ruling. If the decision is reversed
the section of land in question will
revert back to the province permit-
ting unrestricted public use.
A ruling is expected shortly,
however. the case could be ap-
pealed to the Supreme Court of
Canada.
