Exeter racers
drag race in
Indianapolis
EXETER - Three Exeter men
of representing
Grand Bcnd Motorplex at a drag
race competition in Indianapolis
Thursday through Sunday.
Peter Vander Burgt, Paul McIn-
nis and Dave Bryson have been
competing in Motorplex's National
Hotrod Racing Association
(NHRA) thunder series point event
since the track officially opened
last spring.
The three racers were part of Mo-
torplex's 33 member Thunder Se-
ries team that travelled to Indy for
the Sears Craftsman Bracket Series
Finals. There were similar teams
from 20 other NHRA tracks in Di --
vision 3, each vying for cash and
contingency awards in excess of
$100,00.'
Only the top 11) racers in each
class earned the right to go to Indy.
The difference between the race
classes is speed. Cars in the street
class run down the quarter mile
track in 14 seconds or slower. Pro
cars run it in between 11 and 13.99
seconds and the Super Pro class in
between 7.50 and 1 1.99 seconds.
Vander Burgt races a 1977 Vega
with a 355 cubic inch Chevy en-
gine. He finished second in the Su-
per Pro class point standings at
Motorplex with ,86 points, only one
point shy of the first place leader.
Despite a successful drag race
season in Grand Bcnd. Vander
Burgt was eliminated in the first
round at Indy.
Mcftntis-wasalso et atc'.i rn
the first round at Indy. He races a
1964 Buick Skylark powered by a
455 cubic inch engine. He was tied
for fifth place in the pro class at
Motorplex with 77 points.
"I didn't run my numbers and I
was a little slow off the starting
line," said McInnis.
Kevin Bryson had a better show-
ing of the three. He races a 1983,
Z28 Camaro in the street class.
Bryson advanced to second round
at Indy before being eliminated by
a 120 mph street car. •
"I was so pumped I was sure I
would red light but I never did all
weekend," he said.
Bryson finished first in the point
standings at Motorplex with 85
points. An impressive feat con-
sidering this is Bryson's first year
racing.
"I didn't think I would finish up
first lin the point standings ," said
Bryson who was the first place
leader all summer.
"I was pleased with my per-
formance. My car ran consistently
all year long and it ran consistently
at Indy. I only wanted to win one
round but i went further than I ex-
pc;cted," he added.
All three racers are now turning
their attention to Motorplex's Final
Showdown Bracket Season -Ender
on October 14 and 13.
