Soccer banquet
ends season
Three of 19 Exeter Minor Soccer
teams finished first in their league
Chris Skalkos T -A staff
EXETER - The Exeter Minor
Soccer Association wrapped up one
of their most successful seasons at
an award banquet on Sunday with
three out of 19 teams finishing first
in their league.
The under 15 boys Exeter Ath-
letics, coached by Jamie Dougall,
and the Under 11 Boys Exeter Ea-
gles, coached by John Muller,
earned championship titles in the
West Middlesex Youth
soccer League, while
the Exeter Three Squirt
coached by Nick Fra-
giskatos and Wendy
Case also ended with a
winning season.
Bart DeVries, past
president of minor soc-
cer, said this season
marked a year of
growth. Although the number of
teams have remained the same, the
number of youngsters playing soc-
cer has increased.
"The number of kids have in-
creased especially at the tyke lev-
el," said DeVries. "When you have
that many kids starting at a young
age you know soccer is going to
improve in the future."
He attributes the popularity of
the sport to a supportive com-
munity. From the sponsors who do-
nated jerseys to the parents who
volunteered setting up nets, DeV-
ries contributes the success of the
minor soccer program to the efforts
of many individuals.
One of those individuals is Kevin •
Koricina, the winner of the Scott
Hasslebach Award. Considered to
be the most prestigious award
"It

so
handed out at the banquet, it goes
to the person, player or volunteer
who has made an outstanding con-
tribution to the program.
Despite not having any children
of his own, Koricina is an adult
who has been involved with minor
soccer, either as an executive or as
a coach, for eight years.
With only a pair of soccer shoes
and shinpads required to play the
sport, DeVries said it is very in-
expensive, and a recent
decision by executives
to move into the rec-
reational West Mid-
dlesex Youth Soccer
League keeps the sport
fun.
"It's an active sport
and everyone can get in-
volved. You don't have
to be a star to make the
tease," he said. "It isn't as popular
as hockey but -here are 370 kids
playing soccer, more than any oth-
er sport as far as I know."
Peter Hakvoort, incoming pres-
ident, said minor soccer is not only
growing, it's also moving in new di-
rections.
"We're looking at establishing a
recreational minor soccer rec-
reational league this season. There
has been a fair bit of interest ex-
pressed but we we'll be competing
against ice sports," he said.
Hackvoort feels his biggest chal-
lenge next season will be securing
enough playing fields if the pop-
ularity of minor soccer continues
to grow.
"I feel pretty confident we're go-
ing to have another good year," he
said.
