Today Davis is the fastest 60 cc class racer in Can- ada. Davis came in second place at the Trans Canada National Motorcross race held in Walton Ontario from August 17-20. Riders from across the country competed in the 60 cc hike class which pitted the en- durance and riding skills of 32 rac- ers between 9 and I 1 years of age. Davis rides a modified KX 60 cc Kawasaki but sometimes competes in the 80 cc class against the bigger bikes and older riders. He first raced when he was six years old coming in 5th place out of 12 riders at Eagle's Nest Raceway in Brantford Ontario. Since then, Davis, who turns nine on August 29, has collected over 60 trophies churning up dirt tracks with his motorcycle in races across the province and now has his eye on the Loretta Lynne Race in the United States. The event is the biggest amateur motorcross race in North America with 40 riders com- peting in each class. In order to qualify, Davis must first race in two American Mo- torcross Association competitions in Michigan and New York in Sep- tember. "I'rn going to go for it in Mich- igan," said Davis adding he has to place within the top 10 in either race to qualify for the Loretta Lynne event. Davis's father Mike owns MDS, a motorcycle repair shop and looks after the maintenance of his son's two identical bikes. Davis said the sport is expensive estimating it costs $40 a day for an average weekend of racing and $4,000 on repairs since the dirt bikes take a lot of abuse during the course of a race. Davis is sponsored in part by Glanville Towing and Repairs in Huron Park who supply them with gas; however, Mike admits spon- sorship is hard to come by in the amateur class. That may soon change if Harley continues to win and advances to the professional ranks of motorcross racing. "I'd like to see him go pro, es- pecially in the US. That's were the big sponsorship is," he said, adding professional racers can make $100,000 in Pro Supercross racing. Davis said he has fun racing be- cause he gets the opportunity to make a lot of friends at the track but when it comes to the competi- tion, Davis adopts a serious attitude and that's when the rivalry begins. "Off the tracks we're friends but when we're on the track we're not," said Davis. "When I race, I race to win...It's either go hard or go home."
