Veri Trucking
hosts second
annual
scramble golf
tournament
in Exeter
EXETER - Veri Trucking hosted
its second annual scramble golf
tournament at Exeter Golf Club on
Saturday with over 100 golfers tee-
ing off for fun and for prizes.
The longest drive for men and
women on the number 9 hole won a
barbeque.
Closest to the pin for men and
women on the number three hole
took home a color TV.
A hole -in -one on the number
three would have won a sit of Ram
golf clubs and a hole -in -one on the
number six hole unlocked the door
to a brand new Mercedes Benz car.
Putting up the car as a hole -in -
one prize wasn't too risky for spon-
sor Mercedes Benz Credit and Mid -
Ontario Freightliner. The par three
hole sits 165 yards away from the
tee and according to Exeter Golf
Club owner Bob Mason the odds
on getting a hole -in one is a,mil-
lion to one.
1995 Zurich Fair Queen Rene
Sweeny, 1995 Hensall Fair Queen
Mcllisa Timmermans and runner up
Jeanette Denyf were on hand act-
ing as judges on the number six
hole in order to verify any hole -in -
one shots.
Leonard Veri said he organized
the golf tournament as a customer
supplier appreciation day.
"It's a public relations event.
Without our customers and suppli-
ers we wouldn't be in business,"
said Veri.
The tournament concluded with a
steak and lobster dinner at the club
house.

Merner will coach Finland team
Chris Skalkos T -A staff
ZURICH - When opportunity
knocks for Kathy Merner, it usually
means lacing up her skates and
packing a suitcase.
Her most recent opportunity is
no exception.
Merner has accepted a nine
month contract, coaching Finland's
competitive precision skating
teams starting in September.
Next week Merner will fly to
Helsinki where she will assume the
position of head coach for Fin-
land's juvenile, novice and senior
skating team. She will be working
with the Finnish skating team pre-
paring them for national and inter-
national competition next year.
Merner learned about the position
through her friend Wendy DeGraff,
a precision skating coach from
Brampton who has been working
vfith the Finnish teams for the last
three years.
It wasn't the lure of travel that
prompted this 25 -year-old to accept
the position. After all, during her
tours with Rhapsody On Ice and the
Ice Capades, Merner has per-
formed in places such as China,
Hawaii, Australia and New Zea-
land.
Instead, it was the challenge of
coaching the highly talented group
of skaters which make up Finland's
best skaters.
"This was an opportunity i
cotitdn't turn down, I'm fortunate to
be able to coach a high calibre nkat'
ing team," she said.
Precision skating is a dynamic
sport that involves a group of skat-
ers who perform choreographed
routines to music.
The skaters perform in unison,
executing intricate footwork and a
variety of manoeuvres and forma-
tions. It utilizes both technical and
artistic elements similar to figure
skating.
When Merner was offered the
coaching job she turned it down at
first. She was happy coaching at
the skating club in Exeter and was
just getting settled in after rooming
from the Ice Capades.
"At first I said no. i travelled with
the Ice Capades for five years and
that part of my life was over. If it
was an offer for an ice show I
wouldn't have considered it but it's
a coaching opportunity," she said.
Merner admits the hardest part of
making her decision was saying
good bye to her students.
"Each skater is precious to me.
I've come so far with them over the
last two years. it was so hard for
me to explain why I was leaving,
especially to the younger kids,"
said Merner who made an effort to
personally say goodbye to all of her
students. "But 1 will be back next
season to pick up where I left off."
Although Merner hasn't found a
replacement coach for her students
at the skating clubs, her friend De -
Graff has dffered to put a routine
together for the junior team.
A considerable help for Merner
who only had about a week to pack
and didn't want to leave her stu-
dents hanging while the search for
a replacement coach goes on.
Merner said the pressure will be
solely on her to lead the Finnish
teams through two qualifying com-
petitions, one in November, the
other in December to make the na-
tionals in February.
If her teams do well in the inter-
nationals the next stop is at the
worlds to be. held in Boston this
year.
"For me, taking a team to the
worlds is the ultimate. 1 want to
train that team good enough to
qualify for the worlds," she said.
After her season wtlh the Finnish
skaters is over, Merner will return
to Canada and continue coaching.
"I'm going to learn so much over
there, I'm lookinf forward to
bringing it back to toy skaters and
hopefully start a competitive pre-
cision skating team in Exeter."
She feels it won't be long before
precision skating is inducted into
the Olympics and when it does,
Merner will ready to lace up her
skates and pack her suitcase.
