They're all part of Zurich's 30th annual bean festival. About 15,000 people are expected to head to Zurich this weekend to eat beans, see frogs jump, admire antique cars, browse through a street mar- ket, take rides on a midway, witness a juggler, a fiddler, a dancer, see a local children's entertainer, sway to bands, win draw prizes, kick up their heels at a Country & Western dance and experience Cruise Nite. If this isn't enough to keep you busy, you can always try the Has Beans Bingo. It all begins Friday night with a midway, fireworks, the Country & Western dance at the arena and Cruise Nite. Saturday is packed with events beginning early down- town with a Pancake & Sausage Breakfast put on by the Zurich Minor Athletic Association. The day's entertain- ment includes bands Four Shadows and Positively Stom- pin' as well as comedian Country Clem, juggler Craig Douglas, fiddler Randy Morrison, child entertainer "Den- nis" and tapp and jazz dancer Jay Schramek (Mr. North). D tany of the entertainers are performing twice throughout the day. The official Bean Festival opening is. t.noon along with the bingo. Dr. Wallace's Frog Jumping Contest is at 3 p.m. and draws follow at 6:00. All -day events include a downtown market and midway. The Zurich Mi- nor Athletic Association Bean Festival Dance happens later at 9:00. And most importantly, the home -cooked bean dinners are ready to servebe- tween 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Volunteers began to prepare the 2400 pounds of baked beans Sunday night and have continued cooking hundreds of pounds nearly every day. The beans are being stored in Ihrge walk-in coolers where they'll wait to be consumed by eager eaters on Saturday. "The volunteers have always been willing to lend a hand," said Chief Cook, Donna Thiel. "We should have 1500 take-outs by the time we're done Friday." It all begins Friday night with a midway, fireworks, the county & western dance at the arena and Cruise Nite Erb added More volunteers are needed on Friday to help with pack- aging the take-out beans, preparing the bean salad, coleslaw and double checking food plans. As third -year volunteer Carol Prang stood outside the Bean Festival Kitchen mixing the beans around and around she explained "they have to be stirred a lot to get them cooled down." The breezy weather Monday night certainly. helped where- as more humid weather means longer stirring time. This is the last year for Doug Erb as Bean Fest president. Taking a break from cooking beans Monday night, he said it's time for "new people (and) new ideas." he has enjoyed working with everyone and coming up with ,new ideas to improve the Bean Fest, which will have a bigger midway this year along with a new cookbook, Cooking With Beans. Erb listed the town Bean Fest banner, bean table canopy and fireworks as some of the fes- tival's best recent ideas. Bean Festival President Doug Erb keeps a close eye on the bean cooking Monday night in the Bean Fest Kitchen. Busy with beans Bean cooking vol- unteers stir and stir in an effort to cool the beans enough to prepare them for the huge walk-in coolers they'll be stored in until Saturday.
