Communities in Bloom green and growing
STRATFORD - On your mark -
get set - plant! That's exactly what
Stratford did as part of the first an-
nual Communities in Bloom Con-
test. "This is a fun way to compete
-although Stratford has unofficial-
ly had a long standing track record
for beauty," says Ted Blowes, Co-
chair, Civic Beautification and En-
vironmental Awareness Commit-
tee and former mayor of Stratford.
"In the early 1970s, Stratford
was voted one of the cleanest cit-
ies in Ontario by the Conservation
Council of Ontario; in the 1980s,
we were judged one of the three
prettiest communities in Ontario
by the Canadian Automobile Asso-
ciations' magazine; and now our
whole community is busy working
to become one of the first Commu-
nities in Bloom winners in 1995,"
continues Blowes.
Blowes admits that Stratford
Theatre and other programs aimed
at attracting tourists wouldn't have
the sante draw without the back-
drop of manicured green spaces,
hanging baskets on main street or
crescents of well -kept flower beds.
For Stratford, a town of 28,000
residents, the extra effort to create
an attractive and welcoming com-
munity has paid off. In 1994, over
500,000 tourists visited Stratford
generating more than $100 million
dollars in economic benefit for the
area. Tourism is an important in-
dustry for inany other Canadian
cities. In 1992, Canadians travel-
ing inside Canada spent over $16
billion dollars on tourism activities
with more than an additional $8.5
Killion coming from foreign tour-
ists.
Communities in Bloom is a pro-
gram that encourages municipali-
ties to beautify their communities
and reap the benefits - a higher
quality of life, increased tourism
and promotional opportunities; and
positive environmental benefits. In
1995, the program's first year, 29
municipalities across Canada are
competing for top honors in one of
four categories Capital, City,
Town and Village. Stratford is
competing in the Town category
against communities such as Gan-
der, Stony Plain, Morden, Summer -
side, Rosemere, Edmundston Wey-
burn, Inverness and Quesnel.
Sale of Compost
Tenders will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. Friday, August 25th on
the sale of 750 cubic yards of compost. Tenders can be in any
quantity. Removal of compost from site is the responsibility of
the successful tenderer(s) and to be removed by September
15th.
Tender sheets and specifications on compost are available at
the Hensall Municipal Office. Viewing of compost by
appointment only.
Highest or any tender not necessarily accepted.
Village of Hensall
108 King Street, Box 279, Hensall, Ontario
NOM 1X0 262-2812
Participants will be judged on mu-
nicipal landscapes, flowering
achievements, environmental
awareness and community involve-
ment.
One of the national sponsors of
Communities in Bloom is Green
Cross, who bring us first aid for
(awns and gardens. "Green Cross
has long been aware of the benefits
of green space both for personal
enjoyment and for attracting visi-
tors," says Heather Kenney, Green
Cross. "For 50 years, Green Cross
products have played an important
role in helping Canadian home-
owners grow and maintain their
lawns and gardens. We could think
of no better way to celebrate our
50th anniversary than by becoming
a national sponsor of the Commu-
nities in Bloom program, encourag-
ing communities to maintain green
spaces, now and in the future."
In September, the four winning
municipalities will be announced at
a special ceremony in Ottawa, host-
ed by the National Capital Com-
mission. Although only four will
be named as the official winners,
all participating communities will
walk away winncrs,beneftting from
the positive effects of the contest.
"Our goal is that the ongoing ef-
forts of these communities are not
just to, improve their chances of

winning, but that they will be moti-
vated by a growing sense of com-
munity and the pleasure of living
everyday with the improvement
they have worked together to
achieve," says Raymond Carriere,
Communities in Bloom spokesper-
son. "The contest is a co-ordinated
effort designed to appear to visi-
tors, tourists and the people who
live and work there, and is a reflec-
tion of how the community sees it-
self," continues Carriere.
For Canadian communities inter-
ested in attracting tourists or in in-
creasing their existing tourism in-
dustry, well trimmed lawns, flower
beds, and green spaces add photo
opportunities to the tourist experi-
ence. In Canadian municipalities,
the responsibility for creating a
beautiful environment rests not
only with the local parks depart-
ment but with each resident, as
they make sure that their lawns,
gardens and balconies are well
maintained and reflect their pride
in the community.
