Those were the words of Lucan Heritage Festival's chairman Mike An- derson in describing Saturday's first annual event to highlight the history and heritage of the village of Lucan and surrounding areas. Anderson told the T -A Sunday evening that plans are already underway for the 1996 festival to be held on the third weekend in August. Saturday's activities gilt underway at 8 a.m. with a continental breakfast and farmer's market organized by councillor Rosemary Gahlinger-Beaune in the parking lot of Wraith Family Hardware. Providing transportation for the morning wagon tours which were en- joyed by hundreds was supplied by Clare Paton and Charlie Coughlin.. The noon hour parade with Janice Bullock as co-ordinator and Clare Stanley as parade marshal! attracted more than 35 entries. The festival chairman said special praise should be given to Frank and Iola Goring for their excellent period costumes. The oldest participant in the parade was former Clandeboye barber Clarence Millson who now re- sides at Craigholme in Ailsa Craig. First prize in the historical section of the parade went to the Lucan Rookies with their rendition of the Lucan Irish Nine cigar box. Honorable mention went to Victorian Country. In the cultural division, top prize went to Seelster Farms with honorable mention going to Frank Van Bussel and Sons Construction. Tops in the overall category was the Allan Scott Family Heritage float with the Clandeboye Hillbillies coming in a close second. All parade priz- es were donated by the Robert Benner family. Art McLean was instrumental in getting senior entries for the parade. Co-ordinators for an afternoon auction sale of about 1,000 items were Peggy Mastorakas and Mark Coolman. Anderson said he wished to thank the many contributors of items for the auction, especially the merchants of Lucan and Exeter. He added, "Of the 35 businesses I contacted in Exeter all but one made a contribution and Pat was terrific." Special thanks go to Jean Hodgins, Linda Thompson and Dorothy Rev-- ington for their great photo collage of people and events during the long history of Lucan. Coming the farthest distance to the festival was a family from West Palm Beach, Florida and Clarence Millson was the oldest to attend. Many activities .were offered for children during the afternoon including a presentation of 'The Red Rose" by a troupe from the Huron Country Playhouse at Grand Bend.. This was followed in the evening by country music led by Ross McFalts of the Centralia area and the Vander Heide's of Ilderton. In conclusion, Mike Anderson said," The highlight for me was to see and hear many people reminiscing about the past. It was heart warming to see the community spirit and effort put forth by the whole area". A visit to Lucan's Heritage Museum was a must for many visi- tors to Saturday's Heritage Festival.
