Bluewaster plans to handle all solid waste by year 2000 HURON PARK - As its general membership meeting held in Huron Park, on July 26, the Bluewater Recycling Association unveiled its plans for a one stop shop solid waste management program that should be fully available to its members by the year 2000. The plan calls for a four phase deployment of programs for the mem- bers to enjoy a totally hands free solid waste management program that will see diversion exceed 75 percent. "Members are having difficulty han- dling the ups and down of market price for recycling while they are simul- taneously hit with rising waste disposal costs." said Phil Maguire chair- man of the board. "Our members will be able to forget about waste management and concentrate on other local issues that may be more important." Programs under development inciude the collec- tion for the whole waste stream which should be- gin in early 1996 with a centrally managed user pay program for those who opt in by 1998 elimi- nating the need for tax dollars to pay for waste management services. Those programs will be matched with a central disposal facility which will include a dirty material recovery facility to recover recyclables and compostables, left in the waste by unconcerned ratepayers. "We are designing a centralized system that will manage discarded resources rather than waste and that approach is going to make the difference in our ability to reduce our dependance on landfills." said Francis Veilleux, President of the Association. From its humble beginnings in 1989 to today's award winning organiza- tion serving over 50 municipalities in southwesternOntario, the Associa- tion grew primarily for its ability to respond quickly to needs of local mu- nicipal governments. While this approach has been fruitful for the Association in the past, the directors of this Association and the manage- ment clearly believe that a more proactive approach to providing services in the future is needed to ensure continued growth and success. Furthermore, the Association will continue to keep abreast of external developments in the industry. The Association believes the time has come for a full review of our waste management practices as many technologies are now available to better handle what we dispose of in an environmen- tally friendlier way while lowering costs. "The results of our efforts outlined in the plan will be the most effective waste management system in Ontario. Our sy°tem will divert waste like no other because it will be built on the foundation that waste is simply an unexploited resource," said Maguire Glad Days in South Huron GRAND BEND - Glad Days are coming to a town near you in South Huron, on August 10 and 11.
