More girls play
minor soccer
Minor soccer in Exeter has opened
the door allowing more girls to play
Jason McFalls
EXETER - Anyone who has fol-
lowed Exeter minor soccer over the
last few years will notice the sport
has more girls participating now
than ever before.
The formation of girls teams has
been the biggest change in minor
soccer in recent years. It is a
change for the better according to
Exeter minor soccer President Bart
DeVries who added girls teams
were only started within the past
five years.
Before that time
there was little
choice for young
girls wanting to
play soccer. It was
either join the
boys teams or not
play at all. Very
few girls were
willing to play under those circum-
stances and minor soccer lost a lot
of potential players. Fast forward to
this summer and female soccer
players have plenty of opportunities
to play. There arc eight girls teams
between the ages 10 and 18 com-
pared with just six boys teams.
"Our registration is at its highest
point ever with over 300 kids play-
ing soccer," said DeVries. "Girls
make up almost half of that total,"
he adds.
The interest in girls soccer orig-
inated at the high school level in
1986 when South Huron District
High School formed a girls team
that attracted a number of eager
players. Eventually two teams, a
junior and a senior, were created to
accommodate the growing interest.
Juanita Chappel, a member of the
under 19 girls team stated there arc
many girls from the high school
team that play minor soccer and
have the chance to continue playing
next summer on the Women's team.
"I will tryout for the women's team
and see if I make it," said Chappel.
The Women's team called the Ex-
eter Mudhens was formed last sum-
mer by Cindy Moore with the aim
to give young women a place to
play after the minor soccer years
are over.
"Women used to have to travel to
London if they
wanted to play,"
said Moore.
Moore, who also
coaches the under
17 girls team,
hopes the Mud -
hens can attract
more local players
in the future as
most of its current players are from
outside the Exeter arca.
Moore said creating girls teams is
a positive step because it makes it
easier for some girls who may not
have wanted to join a boys team to
play.
"When I played minor soccer
there were only a handful of girls
from Exeter that would play soccer
on the boys team," said Moore.
Watching an under 11 girls game,
one gets the feeling the girls are
just happy to have the opportunity
to play soccer and have full at the
same time. According to DeVries,
the main' goal of Minor soccer is
exactly that; for the players to have
fun. "seeing the kids cnjoy them-
selves is what soccer is all about,"
said DeVries.
This is one thing in soccer that
has not changed over the years.
"Our registration is
at its highest point
ever with over
300 kids playing
soccer,"

Womens
soccer team
notch third
win of the
season
EXETER - The Exeter Women's
Soccer Team beat South End 4-0 at
home on Sunday July 23.
Martha Hook opened up the scor-
ing early in the game by capitaliz-
ing on a poor clear from the South
End defence and chipped it over the
goalie's head.
Exeter had several chances to
score but could not capitalize on
any of their scoring opportunities
until Heidi Mat -tin scored to give
Exeter a 2-0 lead late in the first
half. In the second half Cindy
Moore dribbled through the defence
and goalie and put the ball in the
net. She repeated the same play for
another goal giving Exeter a 4-0
lead. South End missed a chance to
get on the board on a penalty shot
in the second half. The ball hit the
cross bar and Exeter goalie Kristen
Crawford saved the rebound record-
ing a shut out. This is Exeter's third
win of the season and their next
garne is at home Sunday night.
In other female soccer action, the
Exeter Under 17 girls soccer team
defeated Strathroy last week. Adria-
na de Bont scored two goals and
Stephanie Katz added one. Jodi
Willis and Laura Cook recorded _t,
sists.
